Directed by Jeremy Herrin, This House gives us a very amusing insight into the workings of British politics. Set in the rooms of Westminster in 1974, this gripping production portrays the politicians behind the scenes within the House of Commons.
In an era of chaos, where the UK faces economic crisis, a hung parliament and minority government, and votes are won or lost by just one. This plays very cleverly and hilariously demonstrates how the whips will do whatever it takes to win. From fist fights, to relying on dying MP’s votes, to running around frantically backstabbing and playing games – anything to lobby the votes of the other parties.
In a very male dominated environment with a plebeian verses aristocratic culture, the play again with great humour touches on current equality issues such as woman in parliament and the perceived class of parties.
The stage setting is a simple division of the offices of the Labour and Conservative parties with audience seating either side to represent members of the parliament – which is a nice touch. There is also a live band on stage playing music from the era which compliments the small cast nicely.
The Festival Theatre is a modern spacious theatre with bars to choose from on different floors which provides a nice space to socialise before and during the interval of the show. Being in the city centre it also has an array of bars and restaurants around it and is easily accessed by public transport. There is parking near and around the theatre however it can sometimes be difficult to find a space.
I had a nice night watching a very enjoyable play in a lovely setting. I would give my evening 4 out of 5 stars and would definitely recommend to friends and family. Perhaps not one for the children however.
