My Mummy Is Magic by Dawn Richards Review

I cannot deny I was very excited to receive ‘My Mummy is Magic’, a children’s book written by Dawn Richards. My little girl loves story time and to have a book were we can relate to the characters is fantastic.
Having a 3 year old child with Autism and ADHD it can often be very difficult to get her to stay and listen to a whole story but she loved this one, she even asked me to read it 3 times over.
The front cover was bright and colourful, the gloss effect on the stars gave it the magic touch. The first picture in the book is of a child in pyjamas waving a magic wand to which my daughter exclaimed ‘My Wand, It’s me, look I got PJ’s on’, she instantly thought the characters were me ‘Mummy’ and her. The illustrations throughout the book are easy to relate to and really bring the magic to life, as my daughter can’t yet read she quite happily sat there with the book after mummy had read it and went thought each page herself reading through the pictures, the pictures made it quite easy for her to understand.
There has been great attention to detail in the illustrations, not just for the characters and the activity they are doing, but also in the background like the scene in the kitchen were mummy is making pudding the child’s toys are shown under the table having a their own picnic. Throughout the book the toys are on nearly every page peeking out, smiling, and waving. On the pages that the toys aren’t on there is often something else going on in the background one page has mummy and child flying on a magic carpet below them shows a knight fighting a dragon outside a castle.
The storytelling scene is probably the best page of the book as there is so much to see all the stories are coming to life on one page. I have often looked for children’s books that represent the mummy and child relationship that don’t concentrate on stereotypical things like washing clothes, tidying bedrooms and what not, I think this book has perfectly captured the everyday activities that mummy’s do but from the child’s point of view for example “Even when I’m grumpy, and it’s time to have a bath, my magic mummy knows just how to make me smile and laugh,” all of the verses softly rhyme.
I would definitely recommend this book it is a beautiful and easy to read for any mummy and child it’s colourful, full of character, and really brings magic to life.
The only changes I would maybe like to see would be the edition of some sparkle/glitter around the magic wand, or even a touch and feel version of the book would be lovely.
