The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Octagon Theatre, Bolton

Reviewed by Michelle Wright

…was certainly wonderful indeed! In true Octagon Theatre style their rendition of L. Frank Baum’s famous story certainly gets you into the spirit of Christmas with an evening out the whole family will enjoy!

The Octagon’s version includes all the familiar characters such as the Tin Man, The Scarecrow and The lion, and of course Dorothy who is trying to get home to Bolton rather than Kansas! It is very light hearted, full of action with lots of funny moments on both an adult and child’s level. The two young girls in our party were intrigued that the characters and musicians appeared all around us and some even entered the stage area via a slide at one point!

The music is modern and takes the form of lots of different genres including rock and hip hop – my daughter loved the hip hopping good fairy! There’s no version of the ‘Yellow brick road’ or ‘Ding dong the witch is dead’ but it was an absolutely fabulous evening and a magical start to our Christmas run up. Definitely recommend – and in fact, I already have!
