This was the first time we’d ventured out for an evening meal since our baby had been born so I really had forgotten how long it takes to get ready with a baby in tow! We had booked our table for an early Friday evening and were running so late that we called the restaurant on route. A very efficient and friendly lady from the hotel side took my call and guaranteed me that it was no problem. On arrival, the pleasant bar staff directed us to the restaurant where the manageress greeted us assuring me that our lateness was no issue at all. We were led through the very busy restaurant to a smaller, quieter area. Our ten year old daughter and eight year old son were extremely excited to see a helium balloon arrangement on the table and William thought this was especially for his birthday! I noticed that these were on all booked tables and really added a lovely touch. There was a lovely ambience with nice background music.

The manageress informed us that our server, Gemma, would be with us shortly and asked if we’d like bread at our table, which we gladly accepted and ordered our drinks. Sophie and William chose squashes as we were informed these would be included with their meal deal and my husband and I chose a pint and a half of bitter, of which we had two choices. We also asked for a jug of water on the table. Without requesting one, a highchair was bought to our table, along with colouring crayons and hats to colour, even the baby was offered one!!

Gemma, who was extremely smiley and bubbly, arrived very quickly with our drinks and the largest jug of water we’d ever seen! Our bread arrived and we soon realised that we had been served the bread sharing platter from the menu, due to this we chose not to have a starter. The menu choice was excellent, I chose the rack of ribs and my husband chose the Classic burger, we asked Gemma what the ‘bottomless’ chips were, as we had a choice of them included in the price or could pay an extra 69p for the ultimate chips, and she excitedly told us that it meant we could have as many as we liked! We were simply to order another portion when we’d finished the first! Well, this was just too tempting for us both so I chose plain while my husband chose spicy. The children’s menu  had a great choice that is definitely not just aimed at young children, with choices of chilli and curry amongst the usual fish fingers and sausages and this tempted Sophie who is usually ‘too grown up’ for the kids menu. Their mains menu was broken down into three steps so Sophie chose Chilli from step one with Chips from Step two and Tortillas from step three, each step had at least 5 choices, including at least two healthy options. William chose Fish fingers, chips and buttered corn on the cob. This was definitely the best Children’s Menu we’ve seen.  As Sophie usually has an adults meal, we ordered her a side of onion rings.

Our meals arrived quickly, the children’s meals were huge, three fish fingers on William’s meal with a bowl of melted butter for his corn. Sophie’s chilli so good that Adam and I couldn’t resist trying some! It was not hot but extremely tasty and we were all impressed. Our meals were excellent to, Adam was particularly impressed with the spicy chips so when Gemma returned, we both ordered more spicy ones. Our extra portions arrived within 4 minutes of requesting them.

Choosing desserts was always going to be tricky as I am unable to eat dairy due to feeding my dairy intolerant baby, we explained this to Gemma who immediately offered to fetch us their allergy file. She spent a good five minutes going through every ingredient of each of their desserts and was extremely apologetic when we realised there was nothing. This could easily have been rectified by simply having a choice of a sorbet dessert as dairy intolerances are surely a very common issue. Gemma recommended to the children the build-your-own chocolate pudding… the puddings were huge and extremely impressive for the price, £5.29 for the meal deal or £1.29 on their own. The children told me this was the highlight of their meal!

Our only disappointment of the entire evening was that when we were offered the bread we believed this to be a complimentary roll each, instead we were charged £4.49 for the bread sharing platter. All in all we all felt that we had had a wonderful dining experience made even better by the excellent service. In fact Sophie and William want to go back as long as Gemma serves them again!! We all happily give the Badger’s Sett a 4.5 out of 5.
