The Spooks Revenge by Joseph Delaney Review

Reviewed by Catherine Joyce

This book is the final instalment of The Wardstone Chronicles, a series of 13 books about a boy called Tom Ward. Tom is the seventh son of a seventh son and is also the last apprentice of a spook called John Gregory.

My 12 year old son is a big fan of this series and has been gradually working his way through the books and was thrilled when I gave him the latest book to read and review. He enjoys the books because they are set in Lancashire and the place names are based on real places that we know. There is a handy map at the front of the book so you know where the places are in relation to one another and also a helpful summary of the main characters. If you have followed the series from the start you may not need this but it is helpful if you are picking up the book for the first time without having read the previous books.

When I asked him what he thought of the book this is what he said

I really enjoyed this story however The Spook’s Revenge wasn’t quite as good as some of the earlier books. I don’t want to give away the story but there are plenty of unexpected twists and turns before the story finishes. The book does tie up the loose ends and the doors are opened to a new series. My favourite part of the story was the battle where Tom finally destroyed the fiend for good. There were a few surprises along the way which added to the excitement. The story is easy to read, well-paced and I couldn’t put it down.

This series of books has finally grasped the imagination of my son and turned him into an avid reader after having shown no interest in books before! I would certainly recommend it for young teens.
