The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre London Review

22 November 2018 to 6 January 2019

This weekend my son and I experienced the enchanting stage adaptation of ‘The Snowman’ at the Peacock Theatre in London.

Based on the classic children’s novel by Raymond Briggs, and the film directed by Dianne Jackson, this makes the 21st year of this production on stage and it’s easy to see why this timeless tale continues to draw audiences every year.

This is a heart-warming story which transports one into a wintery wonderland of a young boy and a magical snowman that comes to life and embark on a series of adventures.

The show opens with the unforgettable and hauntingly beautiful Walking in the Air. The plot is very simple and with no dialogue this makes this suitable for young children. There were families with children of all ages in the audience who appeared to be transfixed with their attention held by the impressive sets, the ‘Flying in the air’ and the feeling of being in a winter wonderland. My eight-year-old son seemed to be one of the older children in the audience and thoroughly enjoyed this.

At the same time, adults will be impressed by the brilliant mix of complex dance routines. The boy, played by Lewis Chan, had endless amounts of energy and stamina along with the other performers. However, my favourite dance sequences involved the Ice Princess music box ballerinas, played by Emanuela Atzeni and Tomoyo Tanimoto Jequier, whose performances were breathtaking!

In addition, the captivating sets and musical score added to the sheer enjoyment of this performance.

The fun and adventure makes this show a delightful treat for all ages, combining the innocence of childhood with the magic of Christmas which the show captured very well through the costumes, Christmas images and musical score.

The highlight of the show was when the boy and the snowman flying sequence. Accompanied by the hauntingly beautiful ‘Walking in the Air’, it proves to be a very emotional experience and I had tears in my eyes.

This is a great Christmas treat that is experienced through the magic of dance and expression. I give this production 4 stars and look forward to seeing it again next Christmas.

The Snowman is playing at the Peacock Theatre until 6 January 2019. The theatre is conveniently located less than a 10-minute walk from Holborn tube station.
