The Raven, Glasgow Review

Glasgow punters aren’t short of options when it comes to gourmet burgers and slow smoked meaty goodies, so when a new competitor joins the fray, they need their food to shout damn loud to be heard above the din.

Thankfully for the folks behind The Raven, which nests slap bang in the middle of town on Renfield Street, their menu screams quality, value, variety and good old fashioned tastiness.

We popped in a little after 6.30pm on a school night, and were immediately impressed by the lively atmosphere and friendly staff. Whether you’re an office group out for a post-work livener or, like us, a couple with young children keen for an early feed, there’s a corner and offering to suit.

A well-proportioned main bar leads into a more intimate dining area, where the service is slick and the sauces gloriously sticky. We went for the half smoked chicken, left to ponder over seasoned woodchips for a whole 12 hours, and a pulled pork sandwich. Both went down a treat with a portion of spicy cheese fries, while an unusual suspension of noise and nonsense from our toddler chum suggests the kids’ Mac and Cheese wasn’t half bad either.

There’s a great selection of craft beers if that’s your thing, and once you’re fed and watered, it’s a short plod back next door to enjoy some live music, TV sport or the intriguingly-titled smartphone pub quick they’ve got going on a Wednesday.

A great addition to the scene and one that should last the pace.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
