With two teenage daughters we seem to have music playing constantly in our house. We have speakers in most rooms in the house but none of them are portable. They have to be plugged into a mains socket or you need to purchase a separate battery pack to attach to the speaker to make it portable. Last year we did buy a battery pack to make one of the speakers portable. Though it does work it makes the speaker bulky and heavy and the charge on it only lasts a few hours so it’s not ideal.

My first impression of the Logitech Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 portable speaker is how small and compact it was, yet robust at the same time. Available in a variety of different colours ours came in a funky blue and aqua colour. It’s modern looking and made from recyclable plastics. There is a useful small elasticated hook / handle on the speaker.

On top of the speaker are three buttons. One to switch the speaker on and off, a Bluetooth sync button and a function button. Press and hold the sync button to pair the speaker with your device. I paired it with my phone (making sure my Bluetooth was turned on) and it quickly found the Wonderboom 4 even bringing up a large pop up box asking me to pair with it. The middle button is a function button. Short press it to play / pause. Double press to skip.

The speaker has 360 degree sound which provides amazing sound quality no matter what mode you choose. For something so small and compact I honestly wasn’t expecting such a powerful sound. Volume is adjusted by short pressing the large + or – button on the front of the speaker to increase / decrease the volume.

There’s a button on the bottom of the speaker you can press to change to outdoor boost or podcast mode so you can select the best sound mode depending on what you’re listening to.

Once fully charged the speaker has 14 hours battery life. You can literally take it for a family day out, in the garden or party with your friends and not have to worry about the speaker battery running out of charge. Simultaneously press the + and – button on the front of the speaker to check battery levels. The Wonderboom 4 will then speak about the current battery level status. You can even pair up two Wonderboom 4 speakers to create more sound / volume.

The speaker is waterproof, dustproof and has a 40m Wi-Fi range. It is 1.5 m drop proof and even floats in water! On the back of the speaker there is a charge port to connect the charge wire which is covered with a weather proof door.

This will definitely be a family favourite this summer for music in the garden and will be going with us on days out / holidays. It was quick and easy to set up (even if you’re not tech savvy). No app needed. There are cheaper portable speakers available on the market but this is definitely worth paying that bit extra for. It’s compact to carry around, battery life is long and the 360 degree sound is crystal clear and precise.
