This week I have been lucky enough to sample one of The Paddock’s (www.thepaddock.org.uk) selection of vegetable boxes that gets delivered free straight to your door.
The service itself is such a good idea as it is really difficult to get freshly grown, organic, local produce into your kitchen, and as this is delivered to you it really couldn’t be any more convenient. The option we went for (more on this later) was the weeks small veg box which consisted of: carrots, new potatoes, courgettes, salad items, sweet potato, onion and cabbage (for 1 -2 people). This retails for £10 which I thought was very reasonable. You could tell all the food was fresh out of the garden. After having cooked a few meals, and made salads with the veg, it tasted a lot better than supermarket equivalents which just don’t taste the same as “home grown” vegetables – these were fresh and far tastier.
There are a number of different options you can choose from depending on amount of people you are catering for, and which vegetables you don’t like. For example you can choose from a value box, costing £7.50 to a large box costing £20. There is also a choice of a Mediterranean or mixed fruit and veg option, or you can completely customise your box for something a bit different. The prices for these also include delivery around the local area (Gateshead, Newcastle, County Durham and Northumberland), Laura was extremely helpful with arranging a convenient date and time for delivery to me.
Another great thing about The Paddock is the option to add on fresh eggs, all of which are laid by the hens on site at The Paddock the day before. These eggs were amazing, extremely tasty, quality that I feel you definitely cannot find in the supermarkets.
The website is easy to follow and clearly explains the process from the start, it helps guide you to the most appropriate selection for you as it describes in detail each option. There are also a lot of pictures of the fruit and veg prior to delivery so you can get more of an idea how much you’re going to get for your money, and also an idea as to the quality of the produce.
Overall I would give The Paddock 5/5 – good value for money, the delivery was on time so I wasn’t waiting around for it, the veg was fresh, and it tasted great. I would definitely recommend to others, and would purchase again myself.
Prices start from £7.50 to £20 for vegetable boxes, £1.50 for 6 eggs, fresh fruit from £1.50, salad bags £8. Delivery is free locally subject to a £7.50 minimum spend.
