Tonight I have been with my friend to see Steve Steinman’s The Meat Loaf Story at Grand Opera House in York. I like visiting this theatre as the carpark is just around the corner and parking is never an issue.
We got our tickets from the desk really quickly and made our way to the seats which were in the upper dress circle. We had a brilliant view of the whole stage. I know Meat Loaf is very popular but I was really surprised at how busy the theatre was, I think there were only few empty seats.
I was looking forward to the show starting as I went to see the same tribute act last year at another theatre.
The show started on time and opened with the music playing showing only the shadow silhouettes of the 2 guitarists, as they got further into the song the curtain came away to reveal the rest of the act which was made up of Steve Steinman as Meat Loaf, 2 backing singers, a drummer and a pianist. We were then treated to outstanding renditions of “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” and “I Would Do Anything For Love”. The first half seems to be over far too quickly and before we knew what was happening they were breaking for an interval.
The second half opened with the popular “Dead Ringer for Love” this had the audience out their seats dancing and singing along with him.
The last time I saw the Meat Loaf tour the backing singer did a solo of “It’s All Coming Back To Me” originally sang by Celine Dion but covered by Meat Loaf, I was really hoping she would sing this again which she did and it was still as breath-taking as it was the first time I heard it. One of the guitarists did a solo too, although I’m not a huge fan of guitar music but he did a compilation of Meat Loaf’s songs which was amazing.
Steve told us that his drummer and pianist were new to the band and that this was their first performance together, this didn’t show at all in their performance and they came across as a well-rehearsed band that had been together for a while.
They closed the show with a roaring performance of “Bat Out of Hell”, with some amazing lighting and technical treats for the audience.
The show was flawless which matched the staging, lighting, and the backing singers and all the band members.
This was a brilliant show and a great way to start their 2015 tour, I’d definitely put this on a “not to miss” list.
Rating: 4.5/5
