Last night I was extremely fortunate to be invited to a private press preview of the award winning musical extravaganza The Lion King. There were fewer than 80 of us, I was surrounded by students, celebrities, local charities and the local press, the one thing that we all had in common was our love of the original Disney film. None of us had any clue about the magic we were about to see. At 6pm we were taken through the many secret passages inside the theatre until we arrived at a small stage surrounded by seats.
Then the Disney magic began, the lights went out and the performance came to life. Rafiki took to the stage and belted out the hit “The Circle of Life” when the performance ended you could hear a pin drop. I think we all realised we had just witnessed something special. Following on from that we had a fantastic, interactive presentation from Stephen Crocker who is part of Disney’s theatrical team. During the presentation we were shown some of the amazing props that are used in the show and the history and development of the Lion King from screen to stage, the amount of time and effort it takes to create a stage show like the Lion King is simply phenomenal.
Finally the show concluded with spectacular musical numbers from Rafiki, Nala and Simba, the actors voices are top notch and the dialects they take on are believable, to the point where you wouldn’t have thought Nala (Ava Brennan) was from Liverpool.
All in all it was a mesmerising Disney extravaganza and I for one cannot wait for the full show to come to Liverpool from 15 May to 5 July 2014.
