The Importance of Being Earnest at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal can be summed up in two words: absolutely fabulous!
As one of Oscar Wilde’s most famous comedies, The Importance of Being Earnest follows two friends, Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, who both tell a few lies to make their lives more exciting. Worthing invents a non-existent troublesome brother of the name ‘Earnest’ who he uses as an excuse to leave his countryside manor and ward, the stunning Cecily, to visit his love, Gwendolyn, in the city. When visiting Worthing’s manor, Moncrieff decides to take on this persona of ‘Earnest’ and falls deeply in love with Cecily. When Worthing and Moncrieff’s lies are discovered through a rather amusing chain of events, more hilarity ensues with a somewhat sentimental yet entertaining ending. With twists, turns and laugh out loud moments galore, this comedy is full of the wit and charm that Wilde is best known for.
The Bunbury Company of Players were tremendous fun – the production was portrayed as a play within a play and the all-star cast including Nigel Havers, Martin Jarvis and Sian Phillips, were outstanding. Using only one beautifully detailed backdrop – the house of one of the cast members where they were carrying out the dress rehearsal for their ‘play’ – they believably made the different scenes within the Importance of Being Earnest come to life, inviting the audience in with inside jokes including Haver’s comedy wink, and the lack, then abundance thereof cucumber sandwiches, you can see why the production is award winning!
A wonderfully fun night for all ages that should most definitely not be missed, the play is on until Saturday 28th November at the recently renovated Theatre Royal, situated in Glasgow city centre, just off the M8 motorway, close to Cowcaddens Underground, the bus station and Queen Street train station. With parking in the nearby Cambridge Street Multi-storey, it’s easy to find and access.
Tickets cost from £11.90 to £40.40 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
