I really enjoy looking after my home and I’m a huge advocate for self care so when I saw that there was an opportunity to try out and review some products from The Calm Society I put myself forward and was excited to see what I would be sent. I have used essential oils for years, both to scent my home and for their therapeutic properties but I had not tried this brand before. While I waited for my goodies to arrive I had a quick look at the company’s website and was really impressed.
The Calm Society is a family owned company, and their uniqueness shines through. They are not just a company that make candles which smell ‘nice’. Yes, they do make candles, and yes, the candles smell nice (in fact they smell amazing) but as a company they hold themselves to very high standards. One thing which jumped out at me was that they are UK based, not just for their distribution, but for their manufacturing too. Alongside that, their products are natural, ethically sourced and vegan. So as well as smelling nice you can be sure the products are not harming you, or anyone else along the supply chain. I like the fact the candles use a soy wax base rather than paraffin as the candles burn so much more cleanly, no black smudges to be found on my walls! I also like the concept behind the range available. They haven’t just produced hundreds of different scents for the sake of it. They have carefully chosen blends of oils which serve a particular purpose. Of course you can choose your blend based on oils you like the smell of, but the fact that the blends also have an impact on mood means you can choose the blend best suited to your self care need at the time.

There are 7 blends available in total, Balance, Calm, De-Stress, Energy, Focus, Happiness and Sleep. I opted for the Balance blend and was pleased to receive a full sized candle and also bottle of the oil blend to us for massage, or in a vapour spray. The Balance blend uses Geranium, Patchouli, Peppermint, Lemon and Mandarin. Each individual oil within the blend serves a purpose and this is explained really well on their website, and I like that I could use this information to choose a blend to best suit me. If for example I was feeling very anxious I might order the Calm blend with Lavender and Patchouli, or if I needed something to give me a boost I might opt for their Energy with Cedar wood and Rosemary. What The Calm Society have done is to create a range of 7 pre mixed blends which takes all the guesswork out of using essential oils. They have done all the hard work and we get to reap the rewards, a gorgeous range of blends to suit every mood.

The Balance candle comes packaged in a neutral grey box with silver writing, I would say it would appeal to men and women. Inside the box the candle comes in a glass jar with a metal lid. I liked how simple the packaging was and it would sit in any colour decor and not look out of place. I also liked that all elements could be recycled once the candle was finished. Once opened I could smell the Geranium before I even lit the candle, the wax was quite a pale yellow in colour and was softer than I would expect, however the candle burnt beautifully and the scent given off was gorgeous. I used the candle for a few hours burn over 3 days and it is still over ¾ full.
I tested out the massage oil and used the recommended amount of 5 drops to 10ml of carrier oil, I chose fractionated coconut oil as it is what I had in the cupboard. I forced my other half into getting involved at this point and he gave me a lovely shoulder massage, I find if I am under stress then it creates shoulder tension and then headaches, so the perfect use of my blend. He asked what the oil was as he knows I like to use good quality oils and I told him it was a new blend I was testing out, he was really impressed with the scent and said he found it quite grounding, interesting as he didn’t know it was called balance. Whether it was the oil or the action of getting a massage I can’t 100 percent say for sure, but can honestly say I felt so much better after just a few minutes.
Overall I really liked the ethos behind the company and I genuinely believe in the power of essential oils and that they can be hugely beneficial to our everyday lives. What The Calm Society have done is to take very high quality oils and to turn them into blends which can be used daily to support our overall health and wellbeing, and they have done it very, very well.
