My husband and I decided to drive into Birmingham for this show, it took longer than expected because we drove in rush hour as we had planned to get food before the show. We parked at New Street car park which is right by the theatre. It was easy to find a space, however it was a tad pricey at £10. But if a family of you it might be cheaper than train fare.
We entered the New Alexandra Theatre at the main entrance and the staff were incredibly friendly and polite. Our tickets were ready and waiting for us at the desk too. We were given seats in the circle. I haven’t sat in the circle for years. The seats were just as comfy as the stalls and we still had a great view.
The theatre was lovely and clean, the only downside was that the hand dryer in the circle ladies toilets wasn’t working and there was no paper towel alternative. However it didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
One Night of Queen was performed by Gary Mullen and The Works. Gary was Freddie and The Works were the rest of Queen. The lead guitarist had long curly hair (not as curly as Brian May’s but don’t think that would be possible), there was also a drummer, bass guitarist and Keyboard/electric piano player.
They played many of Queen’s biggest hits such as Radio Gaga, I Want to Break Free, Another One Bites the Dust and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Both my husband and I like Queen and we thought they did a great justice to all the songs. Gary really seemed to have the essence of Freddie in the way he performed and was a great singer too. The band also really sounded like Queen in my opinion. They are obviously very popular as many of the audience had been to see them in Birmingham 2 years before. There wasn’t an empty seat in the theatre either!
The whole band wore white tight trousers to give the look of Queen and Gary/Freddie had the gold/red stripes down the legs too. He started with a white leather jacket which was removed to reveal a white sleeveless top and he also performed many songs topless as Freddie often did. Gary had Freddie’s personality, mannerisms and voice, that came through when he introduced songs or when he was singing and dancing around the stage. Both my husband and I thought the show was amazing! I will never get to see Queen perform. So I think this is a stunning tribute to what was Britain’s much loved rock band.
For the finale they did ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are the Champions’, they had the whole crowd up and dancing or clapping. The atmosphere was brilliant for the whole the show, the audience participation with singing and clapping was immense. If you ever get the chance to see Gary Mullen and the Works as Queen I highly recommend it
I think the New Alexandra Theatre is a lovely theatre with a great ambience, I would recommend this theatre and One Night of Queen to all.
