It can be quite difficult choosing the perfect gift for Mother’s day, my Mum certainly has everything she needs and is incredibly difficult to buy for! She always tells us not to buy her anything but we do tend to ignore this because it is quite nice to spoil her and Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to do this. When you do have someone that is very difficult to buy gifts for, I have always found presents like food and alcohol always go down well, especially if it is something they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves.

I never used to be a fan of red wine but over the years I think my taste buds have matured and I now really enjoy a glass of red wine with a nice meal or as a way of relaxing in the evening. Whilst I do enjoy a glass of red wine now and again I’m certainly no expert and always tend to stick to the same couple of bottles that I know I enjoy, therefore I was quite excited to review the Tesco Finest Vina Del Cura Rioja as it was an opportunity to try something different and broaden my red wine selection. A few years ago I went to a local wine tasting event and one of the most important pointers that the expert told us was always to look at the label and see where the wine was bottled. If it is bottled in the country of origin it is always a much nicer wine than wine that has been shipped to England in a huge vat and sloshed around for days before being bottled here.

The Tesco Finest Vina del Cura Rioja is a Spanish wine with a 2013 vintage and when I looked at the label it was bottled in Spain so it passed the first test with flying colours!

The Vina del Cura Rioja is made with hand harvested Tempranillo grapes which create this premium wine, full of mellow black fruits, hints of vanilla and exotic spice. The intensely concentrated Rioja has been barrel aged in fine oak for 2 years before maturing 3 years in the bottle at award winning Baron de Ley winery. Looking at the Tesco website they recommend that this wine complements hearty meaty dishes, roast lamb, beef or game.

I decided to try this with a roast beef dinner and I am pleased to report that it went down a treat! I opened it a couple of hours before we were due to eat, to give it plenty of time to breathe and let the full flavour develop (another tip I picked up from the wine tasting evening which really does make a difference to the flavour of the wine). I’m never really that great at identifying the different flavours in wine but both myself and my husband agreed that it really is a lovely smooth wine with a good flavour and one that we will definitely be purchasing again.

We really enjoyed drinking this wine and it would make a lovely gift for any Mum or Grandma this Mother’s Day.
