On 31st March, it will be 21 years since the first episode of this amazing children’s television series aired. Over the years, it has been huge and then disappeared into the background as other programmes capture the hearts of our children. Recently, however it has had a resurgence of popularity and here we are with the first Teletubbies Live tour. The question is, has it had its day or is there still life left in these 4 cuddly creatures?
I attended the Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells today with my 3-year-old son to see the Teletubbies live show. As we sat down, I was impressed with how colourful and bright the set was. The show was introduced by Sam and she was dressed perfectly to introduce us to the world of the Teletubbies. She instantly got the children engaged and participating with her as we awaited the entrance of the Tubbies themselves. As soon as they entered the stage, I knew this was going to be something special. I found myself smiling thinking this is brilliant. They have pitched this exactly right. The audience were captivated with each Teletubby. They looked great and spoke fantastically. The show had all the favourite Teletubby characters and features, including Noo-noo, the tubby toaster with flying toast, the sun baby, the tubby phone (very modern!) and tummy tale. It was simple but perfect. With some simple and catchy songs to engage and sing along with and some actions to get everybody moving, this was incredible. My personal favourite part of the first half was the beautiful flower dancing the Charleston!
After about 35 minutes, it is time for the Tubbies to take a nap and for the audience to have an interval. There was a merchandise stall where you could buy Teletubbies goodies and a coffee shop for drinks and snacks. My son decided that Po was his favourite and bought a Po headband which he has worn for the rest of the day!
In the second half, we were greeted with more fun and frolics with Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po. They were joined by Sam once again who was just brilliant. The Tummy tale was great too and very cleverly done.
The whole show was just incredible. It was the best 1.5 hours I have had in a long time. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone with young children. There were children there aged a year through to 4 years and there were no grumbles from anyone. It is the perfect introduction to live theatre with small children and no pressure for them to stay quiet or sit still.
The Assembly Hall Theatre was a delightful venue as always and the staff are always kind and friendly and keen to help. Parking is easy in the multi storey car park next to the theatre and the price is very reasonable.
Congratulations for bringing the Teletubbies up to date and I imagine if you keep this up, they will be around for another 20 years… absolutely Tubbietastic!
