My Little World Airport Review

Reviewed by Louise Watts

When packing for a holiday with small children, it is essential to take something to keep them occupied! Colouring is always a good option and does not take up too much valuable space. My Little World is a company brought to life by two school friends to try and encourage children to be creative on a traditional paper and pen level instead of an electronic level.

In a world where electronics are taking over and phones (or should I say mini computers) are part of everybody’s everyday life, it is difficult to find a balance for our children. They are being brought up in a technological world so need to be aware and exposed to these devices, but also need to be children and use their creativity on a practical level.

My Little World have created a range of cut out, colour and play sets which you can make and play with. They retail at a very small fee of £4.99 each and can be brought from their online shop. Recently, I took my 5-year-old son to Scotland and we took My Little World’s airport cut out and play set. This was particularly appropriate as we flew there but also very compact so it didn’t impact on our hand baggage allowance.

The set was packaged beautifully in recyclable cardboard with a simple covering sleeve in colour showing the airport pictures on the front. On opening the cardboard, the set contained 12 A5 airport related cut out cards, 12 colouring pencils and stands to enable you to stand up your cards once you have cut them out and coloured them in to form your playset. The colouring pencils were very good quality and had some lovely bright colours. The cut-out cards had various different scenes relating to the airport and characters to colour and cut out so you can make the whole airport scene. There were instructions on where to cut out the pictures and they were printed on good quality card so they would stand up in the plastic clips provided for fun playing.

My son is only 5, so although his colouring is getting better, it is still at the standard of a small child. He coloured it to the best of his ability and then insisted that he used the scissors to cut the cards out. To complete all 12 cards takes time and we did this over several days so that he did not get bored. He then proceeded to cut them out and then was ready to play. The stands provided to hold the cards are good quality plastic which is fantastic as there is nothing more irritating then when a child is trying to play and they keep falling over! Frustration for all involved!

Once the set was complete, my son played with it using his imagination for hours. It was lovely to hear him talking away to himself whilst playing. He had used his creative side to make the set and was now being imaginative with his playing which was a true delight to watch as a parent. The other brilliant factor with these playsets is that you can pack it all back up in the cardboard packaging and take it home with you to play over and over again.

I have had a look at the other sets in the My Little World range and will definitely be purchasing a couple more in the run up to Christmas as they would make lovely stocking fillers. I would recommend these to anyone who is going away or staying home who would like to sit and be creative with or alongside their small child.
