Places That’ll Get Your Kids Active This Summer

With the technology constantly evolving nowadays, it’s sometimes a struggle to get your children to leave the sofa or step away from their computer and actually venture outside; leaving parents in a never-ending battle over their children’s health. Now naturally, it is unlikely that parents want their young children to attend a gym with a personal trainer, or to start bulking up on supplements like creatine, whey protein and glutamine. Therefore, it becomes extremely important to keep your kids moving in other ways, possibly involving the whole family.

However, with the summer holidays – the ideal time to get your kids moving quickly approaching, check out these fantastic and yet inexpensive locations you can take your children this summer that are designed to keep them physically active:

Ruislip Lido, Hillingdon
RuislipLido
Located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, Ruislip Lido offers a beautiful sixty acre lake complete with sandy beaches and the surrounding woodland area of Ruislip. Other facilities include a mini gauge railway, fishing platforms, a watersplash pad and two playgrounds; leaving your children with plenty to choose from. Complete with a tea & coffee room and a restaurant, the amenities available mean you can easily spend a whole day here. Got a dog? Bring them along too, for they are welcome all year round – eliminating the dog restrictions usually imposed on most beaches. The two main bonuses of this location – it’s open all year round free of charge (including the car parking)!

Craggy Island, Guildford
CraggyIsland
Within easy reaching distance from London, this brilliant indoor area caters for both beginners and experienced climbers. It is considered to be one of the largest climbing areas of its kind, providing over one- hundred rope lines and three-hundred climbing routes that include a variety of surfaces alongside an extensive bouldering wall. If you are a complete newbie, Craggy Island also has a training area; meaning your children can be properly educated on how to climb so you don’t have to worry. Entry prices for Craggy Island are £12 per person.

Canonteign Falls, Devon
CanonteignFalls
Home to Lady Exmouth – the largest manmade waterfall in England, (measuring at 70 meters), Canonteign Falls offers a beautiful woodland experience full of authentic Victorian lakes and secretive fern gardens. Begin your journey at reception and gradually make your way up to the waterfall; where you will receive a breath-taking view of Devon’s hilly countryside. You might even be able to spot a Fallow deer or two. This mesmerising countryside scenery is perfect for photographers and nature lovers. Prices for Canonteign Falls range from £7.50 per adult, £5.75 per child (aged between four and sixteen). Or, you can purchase a family ticket (two adults and two children) for £24.00.

Bubble Football, London
BubbleFootball
Got kids that like football? Then why not try Bubble Football! This utterly hilarious adaptation of football combines the fun of a classic sport with zorbs, (usually seen on water), and involves carefully navigating the ball without bashing into other players and falling onto the floor. Thankfully, Bubble Football can be found in several locations within England, including: London, Brighton, Kent, Southampton, Colchester and more. Prices are advertised in packages on their website, with an hour’s match consisting of fifteen players costing £15.00 per person. Sadly, due to the health and safety regulations of the sport, children can be no younger than ten years old, so perhaps this would be more suitable if you have teenagers.

The Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Snowdonia
LlechweddSlateCaverns
Although sightly far away if you don’t live in Wales, Llechwedd Slate Caverns are perfect for a family adventure. Located under the mountains of Snowdonia, this magical location offers a tour of their well-preserved mines; giving visitors an insight into the historical background of Victorian miners. Above ground, there is an off-road quarry tour and slate workshop; where wine racks, plant pots an even coasters are made. A gift shop & emporium are also available alongside the café. Unfortunately, this activity has an age restriction of seven years old; meaning this would be better for older children. Entry fees for the mine tour are £20.00 per person with a £5.00 discount per person if you buy a family ticket (at least three people with one child).

Splashdown Waterpark, Dorset
SplashdownWaterpark
Suitable for all ages, Splashdown Waterpark offers a wonderful active family experience. Those who are thrill seekers will enjoy rides like Screamer, Black Thunder and Spacebowl; whereas those who are perhaps too young for these water flumes can still have the fun in the Little Buccaneers SplashZone; which includes a starter flume, a beach and a water play area for toddlers. Prices for Splashdown change depending on the time of year, with prices for the summer months, costing between £11.50 – £14.50 throughout June, July & August.

Runcorn Snowsports Centre, Cheshire
RuncornSnowsportsCentre
A cost effective skiing experience, Runcorn Snowsports Centre offers one discounted session for beginners; meaning you don’t have worry about being the perfect skier to participate. Ranging from levels A – F, each stage includes different and slightly more advance skiing techniques, such as parallel skiing and gradually increasing your speed down higher slopes. Snowboarding sessions are also available; which comes in three difficulty levels.  Surprisingly, this ski centre provides lessons for children as young as five, making it suitable for all ages. The cost of each session is £16.00 per child and £20.00 per adult, however there are season passes available, which charge £70.00 per adult and £50.00 per child.
