Robin Cousins Ice at the Alhambra Theatre Review

4-9 February 2014

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from an ice dancing show set in such a small and intimate setting as the Alhambra in Bradford. As avid ice dancing fans though, my mum and I were really looking forward to the show.

We arrived at the Alhambra early. It was my first time there, and we thought the theatre was lovely – lots of little bars to sit and have a drink whilst we waited, and all the staff that we spoke to were very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable.

We were shown to our seats 10 minutes before the performance started. The theatre was clean and was comfortable enough. The seats were a little ‘tight’, but not unusually small for stalls seats. The show itself started on time, and was straight into the action. The show itself was a mixture of individual dances, pairs and some spectacular group ensembles. It was choreographed beautifully, and the fixture of fast paced, slower and even humorous performances kept the audience on the edge of their seats.

The skaters had smiles on their faces throughout the performances, and there was genuine chemistry between them. The personalities and styles of some of the individual skaters shone through and I felt the intimate setting of a theatre was perfect for this. It would have been much more difficult in a larger venue. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing live some of the lifts, jumps and moves that I had only ever seen on the TV previously.

We had an absolutely fantastic evening, for a 90 minute show, it seemed to be over in no time at all. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone with an interest in ice dancing or figure skating to see the show, simply spectacular.

A wonderful evening.
