When I Grow Up… Experience Your Childhood Dreams As An Adult

The process of growing up is one of those things you just have to cope with. Like taxes and the weather; it happens to you, rather than it being something that you actively participate in. As we grow up, we gain an invaluable amount of freedom to do as we please and knowledge to infuse with our minds – but we also lose something.

What do we lose? Our childhood sense of wonder; the belief that anything is possible. Cynicism begins to set in, and we change from the dreams of perfection and focus more on making the most of what we have. Life becomes about what we can do, rather than focused on spontaneous wishes.

There is always the chance to recapture some of that lost shine, however. Many adults find true peace in being able to live out their childhood dreams, uniting their present self with a past where anything seemed possible. If you’re looking for a new hobby or maybe even a more significant life change, then you probably daydreamed about one of the below as a kid. Could it benefit your life as an adult – and is it feasible?

You Wanted: To Be A Race Car Driver

It’s a common childhood dream, and who can blame our younger selves for wanting it? It’s a fast, exciting, technical life that very few of us ever get to experience.

While you’re unlikely to head to F1 any time soon, you can touch on the life that so intrigued you. If you have the funds, you could invest in one of the modern supercars that so stun petrolheads the world over. If that’s a little out of budget, then a track day will give you the chance to enjoy the cars without the chequebook to pay for them.

You Wanted: To Own A Horse

There is absolutely no reason you can’t make this happen in the present. It’s certainly more feasible than being an F1 driver. Of course, you’re going to need to be a capable enough rider and know your horsemanship – but these are skills that you will likely enjoy attaining.

You don’t need a huge amount of land or massive stables to keep a horse. Investigate your options, such as field shelters or even sharing a plot of land with another horse owner. If you have the time and dedication, you can make it happen.

You Wanted: To Be A Ballet Dancer

While that ship may have sailed in terms of actually doing it professionally, you can recapture your love of ballet as an adult. For a one-off treat, a night at a high-end performance is hard to beat. Couple it with a meal at a luxury restaurant and you’ll get a stunning break from the routine of modern day life.

You Wanted: To Go Into Space

If you’re a billionaire, that might be doable. If not, then the best you can do is wait. There is little doubt that space travel for civilians is in the future of humanity, with multiple companies already working on making it happen. This might be a trip for the future, but there’s every chance it’s one your grown-up self is going to be able to make.
