Royal Pains is a comedy medical drama about an emergency room doctor who losing his job and moves to The Hamptons and becomes a concierge doctor to the rich and famous as well as helping the not so well off.

Dr Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) is back for a second series of Royal Pains. After being fired from the emergency room for saving the life of a young man over that of a billionaire hospital benefactor his brother Evan R Lawson (Paulo Costanzo) takes him out to The Hamptons where he sets up as a concierge doctor which sees he living in the guest house of a billionaire.

Hank’s practice is growing and HankMed with Evan as its Chief Financial Officer  and Divya Katdare (Reshma Shetty) as Hank’s Physician Assistant. Their estranged conman father, Eddie R Lawson (Henry Winkler) makes a return.

While having to deal with Eddie who Hank does not got along with he has some strange new cases to deal with such as a policeman with a rash that has all the symptoms of an STD, a wine taster that cannot taste and a TV reality show where the ‘stars’ are dropping like flies. While all this is going on Evan finds love with a blonde heiress.

Having never watched Season One (or even heard of it) I had no idea what Royal Pains was about. Billed as a comedy it is anything but – it is so much more. While not hilariously funny in a sitcom kind of way it is a medical drama with subtle but intelligent comedy built in making it fun to watch. With great characters and good plots it is a must for fans of medical dramas and good quality comedy. And the elusive billionaire Boris brings an air of mystery keeping you intrigued as to what his goal and purpose with Hank are.

I enjoyed it so much I had to go out and buy Season One to know the full story of Dr Hank and Hankmed.

Highly recommended.
