It may not seem like it when you look out of the window, but the summer holidays are nearly here. Al fresco dining, BBQ’s and picnics are on the horizon so it’s time to stray away from the normal bottle in the fridge and look for some alternative summer drinks.

I’m a great fan of Italy, and in particular the Apulia region of Southern Italy so was delighted to be able to review a bottle of Rose wine from the Region. Novantaceppi Primitivo is imported by Imported Brands but sells directly on Amazon so the following day I received my next day delivery parcel, sturdily packed in one of Amazon’s special cardboard drinks packages. I check the back of the bottle, couldn’t see a recommended drinking temperature, so I popped it in the fridge overnight to chill.

The design of the bottle is very classy, cream label with pink and gold highlights and the number 90, the foil around the neck of the bottle is also pink with a gold embossed 90 perfectly complimenting the pale pink wine within. Novantaceppi is the Italian for ninety vines and ninety is the number of plants that were initially selected for the start-up of Latentia winery, now an international successful wine producer.

Novantaceppi now has a selection of nine wines red, white and rose but it’s the Primitivo Rosato Puglia 2020 that I had the opportunity to try. On pouring I found the aroma to be delicate but fruity with hints of berries & cherries and the lovely pink colour was striking in the glass. I found it to be a fresh, clean tasting wine, not at all sweet which would make it perfect to enjoy with a starter, fish or salad. The taste was refreshing and would go down well at a picnic or alfresco dining with friends when all restrictions are lifted. At 12% the wine packs a punch but does not taste strong or cloying, it remains delicate and refined.

If you prefer a red wine Novantaceppi have two other wines from the Primitivo prized grape variety, the Primitivo & the Primitivo di Manduria, both of which I would be very keen to try with red meats or strong cheeses. If you are white wine lover, there are a choice of 3, Sauvignon Blanc, Fiano & Pino Grigio so you are bound to find something to your taste.

If spirits are more your thing then give one of two other Imported Brands a try, Island Signature Rum Turquoise Bay (£26.99) or Generous Gin Organic (£40.28) both available on Amazon. Generous Gin Organic has been designed to give the best Gin & Tonic but is also great in summery gin cocktails bringing citrus notes with a slight bitterness. It also boasts certification with ‘AB – agriculture biologique’. The Turquoise Bay rum is from Mauritius and is enjoyed best on the rocks with mellow taste and notes of sweet wood.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Novantaceppi Primitivo Rosato wine, the taste was great and not to sweet, the wine refreshing, the colour delightful and looked great in the glass. Now all we need are some warm summer days!

Rating: Highly recommended 5/5.
