The Kings Arms Hotel is easily found on the High Street of the historic town of Berkhamsted. This former 17thCentury Coaching Inn is well decorated and has a very relaxed atmosphere. We were warmly greeted at the restaurant reservation desk and shown to a table by a window. From our table we could see the food being cooked on the open plan charcoal grill.
Our drinks were quickly brought as we pondered the huge variety of dishes on the extensive menu. My daughter decided on a glass of rose whilst I stuck to diet cola as I was driving.
We were spoilt for choice, in addition to the normal menu there was also a ‘Special Menu’. What should we have for starters, should we decide on steak, fish or lamb for our main course? A difficult decision, there was so much on the menu we fancied!
Decision made ~ we both decided not to have a starter and save ourselves for rump cap steak with peppercorn sauce, but when we were offered bread, oil and balsamic vinegar we couldn’t resist!
Our steaks arrived served with mushroom ketchup, roasted tomato, rocket salad and fries. The peppercorn sauce was piping hot in individual jugs. We asked for French Mustard and had the choice of three types including Dijon and Wholegrain. Our waiter came to the table several times to check if everything was okay, or if we needed anything.
The steak was delicious, very lean and tender, the mushroom ketchup was unusual and tasty. The fries were hot and crisp, served in a separate bowl. All in all a meal which was a great success!
We turned down the offer of dessert, or tea and coffee as we felt we had had sufficient to eat and drink.
The lunchtime menu at the Kings Arms Berkhamsted appears to be very popular and I can understand why.
