Monster is a naughty monster family pet who is always in trouble for being naughty. When she breaks in to Mum and Dad’s Top Secret workshop and discovers Robot Genie and they soon discover that Robot Genie can grant wishes. We then follow the families’ adventures as wishes are granted and things takes a turn for the worse before Monstar saves the day.
The front cover manages to grasp the main theme of the story and has a lovely picture of Monstar holding the magic lamp. My 6 year old started asking questions before we had even opened the first page so we had to start reading straight away. I have always found it hard to try and gauge the level of reading books I have bought for my children and this Red Early Reader book has a description which helped. Blue early reader books are perfect for sharing and reading together and red books are for those ready for the next step on their reading journey.
Monstar makes a wish is a chapter book and while my 6 year old has yet to move up to chapter books at school he was able to cope with each chapter. Each chapter is a good length to keep a young child engaged and each page has Illustrations by Pete Williamson which complement the text beautifully and help to capture the readers’ imagination.
This book is suitable for young readers who are becoming more independent with their reading but I also found this book suitable for my 4 year old twins as a book we could all enjoy reading together. All of my boys enjoyed this story and has already become popular exploring themes and ideas that they are familiar with. Priced at £4.99 this is good value for money and I in the future I would certainly purchase more of the Early Reader books especially those about ‘Monstar’.
Overall I will give this book 5 out 5 as it has engaged my children to read and has become a story we can all enjoy together.
