A real pleasure to be chosen to review the above play on opening night Monday 30th May 2022.
Most people would have heard of the very famous and classic detective board game Cluedo and recognise it. The game was invented in the Second World War. I certainly remember playing it many a time when I was a young girl along with my family and it certainly brought back nostalgia. A game that many generations will easily remember and the background being murder and who done it. This board game has been brought to life and re-enacted in a very cleverly written play by Sandy Rustin and directed by Mark Bell.
We sat in the stalls and the theatre was busy not many empty seats in sight. It was lovely seeing so many people had made the effort on a Monday night. All the members of staff were polite and friendly. Lots of parking nearby and the theatre is easy to locate with plenty of places to eat close by.
The audience ranged from all ages and all throughout the evening there was plenty of laughter coming from everyone. The opening scene showed all the coloured doors lit up that represented the 6 guests invited for dinner in a old Country Manor House based on a real house in Rottingdean, East Sussex. The guests had no idea why they were invited for dinner. Each door led to a different room of the house. The guests were the famous Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Reverend Green, Professor Plum, Miss Peacock and Mrs White. Each of these characters were all so funny in their character and played their parts brilliantly and looked the part in their cleverly put together attire. Special shout out to Michelle Collins playing Miss Scarlett perfectly. Jean-Luke Worrell who plays Wadsworth, the Tim Curry butler role was fantastic throughout the evening, so funny in every way possible. To be fair huge applause to all the actors they al deserve a special mention as everyone brought something special pulling this board game to life. Miss Peacock was hysterical with her antics. Each guest had something to hide and had you wondering the whole time what on earth was going to happen next.
You always know you have had a great night of entertainment when the evening is over so quickly. The second half was definitely more engaging, I admire the actors learning all their lines which I can’t imagine easy. I wouldn’t want to say too much without giving away the storyline, all I can say is I highly recommend you going to watch this as even now I’m still thinking what actually did happen who was responsible for this murder or that murder. Everyone was really sitting in suspense all the way to the end of the play.
Full of guaranteed hilarious laughter, corny jokes, highly entertaining comedy at its best with the thriller side had you intrigued the whole night and some slightly confused with the ending which was a masterpiece how they rewound making you think who done it, who committed all these murders. Some super really good scenes with storms, chandeliers dropping from the ceiling, secret passages to name a few. We all sat thinking what on earth is going to happen next and made you curious the whole evening.
