Some Guys Have All The Luck at the Preston Guild Hall Review

Some Guys Have All The Luck

Some Guys Have All The Luck – The Rod Stewart Story is a brand new theatre production celebrating the life and career of Rod Stewart. Knowing the night would be wasted on my husband, who normally comes with me to theatre reviews, I decided to take my mum who is a fan of Rod as I knew she would love it. Arriving at the theatre it has to be said 95% of the audience were significantly older than me however they certainly knew how to boogie, with people on their feet by the third track!

Starring Paul Metcalfe, and featuring a fantastic live band, Paul takes the audience through Rod’s life, from his humble beginnings through to worldwide superstardom and record sales in excess of 100 million! Convincingly dressed as Rod, he dances around the stage, waving his microphone stand and retelling Rod’s rise to fame, also making use of video clips which include photographs, images of newspapers and album covers.

The first half of the show follows Rod’s rise to fame from his early days singing in 60’s through to worldwide success in the early 70’s. I wasn’t as familiar with the first few songs but a few tracks in and we were on to one of my favourites, Maggie May and I sang along to every song after that. It was really interesting hearing the stories behind the songs, especially the one that Maggie May was based on. The first half included classics like Sweet Little Rock and Roller and You Wear it Well and Paul was amazing, I really felt I was at a Rod Stewart concert, his energy and rapport with both the band and audience was astounding.

In the second half we heard songs from Rod’s solo career and the pace quickly went up a gear with lots of the audience making their way to the front of the stage to dance. There were plenty of costume changes, as well as the tight black trousers and tartan trousers Paul donned a leopard print jacket for the classic Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?  My favourite song of the night was Tonight’s the Night as Paul sat on the edge of the stage and despite the large crowd it actually felt quite intimate. Other favourites included The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II), Rhythm of my Heart, Baby Jane and Sailing.

The night flew by and before we knew it the show was over, the audience demanded an encore and we were treated to I Don’t Want to Talk About it and a final rendition of Maggie May.

We had a brilliant night out and when Paul said he will be coming to back to Preston we both said we will keep an eye on the website and definitely book tickets for next years show.

Preston Guild Hall, in the centre of the city is a great venue and with a couple of excellent restaurants and bars in the complex it gives visitors the opportunity to make a night of it should they wish. The conveniently located Bus Station car park provides the perfect place to park and although the connecting walkway  direct into the Guild Hall is currently closed whilst the car park is refurbished you normally don’t need to brave the weather!
