After a classic 1980s stylish comedy starring a British icon Michael Caine and American Steve Martin, this musical had an awful lot to live up to. I’m delighted to say it did more than this. From curtain up, the actor’s scene’s and comedy sparkled, the orchestra outstanding and the background scenes made the stage come to life.
Robert Lindsay, a well-established British actor and comedian, both excelled and relished in the role. His lightness of foot and dancing ability was outstanding, and from a man of his age was amazing to watch. He also looked to be genuinely enjoying himself. Couple this with the slightly raucous comedy talents of Rufus Hound, this really set the audience into rapturous laughter. Both Robert and Rufus were clearly enjoying the roles that they were playing and their scenes were very entertaining.
Samantha Bond added a touch of pure British class, familiar to us all as Miss Moneypenny in the Bond Movies, now showing a sophisticated flair of comedy that the audience embraced and loved.
Every song was sung with passion and enjoyment, the audience definitely showed their appreciation of this with a standing ovation. Nearly every scene was peppered with innuendo and at some times flecked with adult humour, which in no way detracted from this truly first class performance. We cannot remember the last time a theatre visit stayed with us for days after the show. The stars, supporting cast and not forgetting the incredible orchestra really presented us with a first class night out.
After one of the most enjoyable evenings we have experienced in a long time, we can only describe this musical as a sophisticated, polished and incredibly funny remake, that actually enhances the original movie and brings it up to date and into life once again.
