Like all parents, we want the best for our children and will do virtually anything for the health and well being of our little
munchkins.

As a person who has always suffered with sensitive skin and eczema myself, I have been acutely aware of how uncomfortable our very own skin can be when we suffer with flare ups or reactions. Therefore, I have been eager to minimise any skin irritations that my baby may experience from wearing a nappy.

Obviously, a nappy sits against the most delicate regions of our precious little one’s skin, pretty much day and night until they are potty trained. Not to mention that the nappy may often be soaked in urine (or worse!!), so it isn’t surprising that our little darlings are often subjected to nappy rash and skin irritations due to where a nappy may sit and rub.

When my daughter was first born, I wanted to ensure that I protected her skin as much as possible and thus, invested in some eco-friendly, biodegradable, expensive, sensitive nappies which guaranteed ‘no nappy rash or your money back.’ True to their word, after the first 4 months of my daughter being ‘nappy rash’ free, I thought it might be worth (or at least A LOT cheaper) to try buying a regular ‘household’ known brand of nappies. Oh boy…. this was a mistake!!!
Firstly, in a matter of 6 hours and 3 nappy changes, I started to notice a red rash appearing on her peachy bum. I had also noted, whilst changing the nappy, a chemical smell, especially when the nappy was wet! As result, I went straight back online and bought the expensive eco-friendly, sensitive nappies. Within 3 days of using these again, the nappy rash had settled!

The other thing I like about eco-friendly and biodegradable nappies, is the sentiment that I’m helping to ‘do my bit’ for the environment, whilst being mindful that our children will inherit this planet from us. In fact, I was shocked to learn that a baby on average goes through a staggering 5,000 nappies in their nappy-weaning life. This reinforces the need to be mindful of the products that we choose to use and purchase, especially when we are disposing of them so readily!

When I was given the opportunity to review a similar eco-friendly product by Kit and Kin, I jumped at the chance! It would be interesting to see how these nappies compare with my ‘usual’ nappies, and to see whether I would be a convert to a different sustainable, hypoallergenic nappy brand!

The first thing I love about the Kit and Kin eco-nappies, is the super cute animal designs that they use. There are 2 animals used for each nappy size. The pictures found on our baby’s derrières are as follows for each specific nappy size;

Size 1: owl & lamb – 2-5 kg (4-11 lbs)
Size 2: mouse & panda – 4-8 kg (9-18 lbs)
Size 3: rabbit & bear – 6-10 kg (13-22 lbs)
Size 4: tiger & fox – 9-14 kg (20-31 lbs)
Size 5: koala & monkey – 11 kg+ (24 lbs+)
Size 6: dog & penguin – 14 kg+ (31 lbs+)

As with most nappies, there is a slight overlap between the weight of the baby and the corresponding nappy size to use, just so that we can ensure that we get a good ‘nappy fit.’ This helps to avoid any unwanted leaks! And after all, every baby is unique with their own body shape!

The Kit and Kin nappies themselves are super soft to touch, and made from 100% of sustainable materials, whilst produced in a carbon neutral factory. The advertising states that the nappies do not sag and can offer up to 12 hours of leak protection. They describe it as ‘channel technology’ and ‘flash dry’ whereby the nappy absorbs the moisture which helps to keep baby’s bottom dry. When changing my baby, I could visibly see this ‘channelling’ within the nappy and my baby did appear to stay dry, even after a sleep session. Although, I have to admit, sleep evades my daughter so I have not tested the ‘12 hours’ of leak protection, but there certainly wasn’t any leak after 8 hours and no notable sagging.

With regards to the smell, I’m pleased to say that even when wet, there was no unpleasant chemical smell with these nappies. The packaging states that the nappies contain 0% chlorine, latex, perfume or lotions. This would also help to reinforce why the nappies are hypoallergenic!

My little girl certainly did not show any redness or nappy rash after a couple of days of wearing these Kit and Kin nappies, unlike she did with the ‘household’ named brand.

When I visited the Kit and Kin website; kitandkin.com, I was also pleased to see that the brand has a range of supplementary products including nappy sacks, wet wipes, reusable cloth nappies, 100% cotton babywear – all of which are produced using the same sustainable, eco-friendly ethos!

The brand are proud to boast that they are the ‘most accredited eco-nappy on the market.’ Some of the accreditations that they have to date include; Dermatest, Allergy Certified, FSC, World Land Trust, Crueltyfree and Vegan, and Carbon Neutral Plant.

As a consumer, these accreditations give me confidence in the products that Kit and Kin manufacture, and it also demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing a high quality product whilst they aim to protect our planet!

The Kit and Kin company also support and help to protect acres of rainforest around the world via the purchase of their products. This just emphasises, and is testament to the company’s ‘green’ and considered approach to our planet.

Overall, I have been really impressed with these Kit and Kin nappies and would say that they are ‘on par’ with the current nappies I buy online. They are actually even cheaper than the current brand I buy. Each individual pack of nappies cost £8. There are 34 nappies in the size 4 pack (quantity of nappies varies dependant upon nappy size), and the company even offers a ‘subscribe and save’ bundle whereby you purchase 4 packs of nappies for £29.96 (each pack works out to cost £7.49) and they come with free delivery.

Am I a convert?…I think I might just be!!!
