The latest trend for houseplants, hydroponic plants do not need soil.  They get all the nutrients they need to grow from water.  This growing system has been used for sometime to grow fruits and vegetables and is now used to give us stylish, easy to care for plants in the home.

When my plant arrived from Feather and Nest it was already in the lovely straight sided glass container but did not have any water inside.  It was well protected, wrapped in lots brown paper packing and then in a sturdy cardboard box.  All packaging was recyclable.

From reading the care card that was included I learned how to look after my plant.  It’s very easy.  All I had to do was put enough water in the tube to cover 80% of the roots and for ongoing care all I have to do is rinse the roots once a month, keep the glass clean and top up with water again. The plant prefers indirect sunlight and is happy in normal household temperatures. The plant growth is slower so they can stay looking lovely in there glass container for as long as possible.

The glass tube has a cork stopper and I wasn’t sure if this had to go back on after I had added the water.  No worries.  I sent Feather and Nest a message to ask them the question and they replied to me within the hour to let me know that I keep it on just taking it off to allow the plant to breath when I change the water.

These plants are a modern, stylish alternative to sending flowers as a gift and would look good in any modern home.  Feather and Nest are happy to include a hand written personal note to the recipient if you are sending as a gift.  The plant I received was in a glass tube that was 20cm tall.  There are a variety of plants available in this size and the one you received will be chosen at random.  There is also a larger plant available that comes in a container 35cm high.  This size comes in three varieties and you can specify which one you want.  Another option is a small glass vase where the plant sits on top.

Feather and Nest is a small independent business.  They have a shop in Didcot and luckily for those of us who live too far away to visit they have a very easy to use online shop.  They have a great range of unique gifts perfect for Christmas shopping.  Green and Wild is their exclusive range of houseplants.  As well as hydroponic plants they have a good range of other houseplants, all of which make lovely gifts or additions to your home.
