My 5 year old daughter was thrilled to receive 2 of the cry babies from the winged house magic tears series. Well on trend being a ‘surprise’ gift we weren’t entirely sure which cry baby we’d be finding inside and what extras came with, this added to the excitement.

We received a purple and a pink house, I was pleased with the minimal packaging which was a plastic outer case not adding to the bulk or size.  The babies are packed in winged plastic houses which opens in the middle with a hinge mechanism. Inside was a cry baby, 4 plastic core accessories that come with every house: a dummy, bottle, high chair and bib plus 2 accessories that are individualised to the particular cry baby.  These are found behind cardboard doors inside the house for a slow reveal, also included was a blanket and stickers to decorate.

To make the figures cry the bottle needs to be submerged in water and squeezed to fill, this can then be fed to the baby and when they are squeezed come out as tears. To empty the toy of water there is a small plug located at the back of the head.

I have some issues with squeezy water toys, as you can’t clean inside it’s not long before bacteria builds up and they get mouldy inside nonetheless my daughter quite rightly does not share such concerns and adored feeding the babies water and making them sob.  The tears are coloured with dye so I would advise they are kept away from soft furnishings.

There are 12 cry babies to collect, each resembling an animal – we received Coney (rabbit) and Tuka (Toucan). Both very cute. I have to query how pleased I would be to get a double up at the price £9.99 each but I suppose this is part and parcel of the surprise toy. Perhaps if someone you know is a collector this could lead to swapsies.

The quality of the accessories varied, it was difficult to get the cry baby to balance on the high chair and it would collapse at the gentlest touch, however the other accessories seemed fit for purpose.

Although I could find many faults with this product there is no denying my daughter loves them, from the start she was thrilled with the surprise then enjoyed the novelty factor, they kept her amused for a long while, she loved personalising the houses with stickers and when she was finished off they went back into their houses, compact and tidy as well as portable which I liked.

My daughter has asked if she could collect them all and they will no doubt make an appearance on her Christmas list. Great size for a stocking filler.

Overall I do feel these are expensive for the quality received and they will before too long need to be thrown away due to mould developing inside which adds to any environmental concerns.

I have decided to score 3/5 primarily based on my daughter’s enthusiasm and enjoyment for the item.
