As a mum of twins who are just going back to primary school after the school summer holidays, I was over the moon when offered a pair of Start-Rite school shoes to review. I must admit that I found it hard to settle on a pair and in the end I settled on a pair of shoes called ‘LUKE’ – Boy’s Black Leather Riptape Casual School Shoes. There was so much choice on their website, which is a huge positive for me. I was amazed to see that 1792 was part of the website logo as I had no idea that the company was established centuries ago. That’s amazing. I think it’s great when a business grows from small roots and then becomes huge, with stores in various areas. I was familiar with the brand from my own childhood. Whilst my twins recently had their feet measured at a local shoe shop, the Start-Rite Shoes website does sell measuring gauges at a very reasonable price (£10 small and larger versions) or you can download a paper measuring gauge or a 3D measuring app for your iPhone. I consider this worthwhile as the gauge would last for years.

The shoes arrived quickly, well packaged. This meant that they were in perfect condition. My little boys face lit up when he saw his new school shoes. Both of my twins certainly put their shoes, but especially school shoes, through their paces. We have had situations in past school years where one or both boys have had 2+ pairs of school shoes during the year due to buying cheaper shoes which are not as well built to stand the test of time and rough play. Upon examining the ‘LUKE’ shoes, it was clear that I won’t be rushing out mid-year to replace these school shoes. The quality is excellent. The shoes are made from black leather. When I found out that they are scuff resistant and have a protective toe bumper I breathed a sigh of relief. I like keeping my children’s clothing and footwear in tip top condition. I have in the past struggled with Velcro fastenings coming undone but these have a double fastening which is much better. I also like the fact that their breathable lining absorbs moisture. My twins cannot yet tie their shoelaces, so the lace free fastening is ideal.  These shoes were clearly made with active children in mind. The shoes are easy to get on and off. They look great on and most importantly they are very comfortable.

I have been lucky enough to try out several pairs of different Start-Rite shoes in the past and every single pair has looked in good condition still when my twins have outgrown them. They were not wearable due to my children’s feet growing rather than a deterioration in condition. In fact, they were in perfect condition to pass on for another child to wear. Whilst at £39.99 I they may seem quite pricey, but I feel that they are worth the investment due to their comfort, how well made they are and that they will last a lot longer.

I recommend Start-Rite shoes not just back to school shoe shopping but for other footwear too. Their website even offers free and easy returns and free standard delivery on full price items. I would not settle for cheaper school shoes again after seeing what Start-Rite have to offer.
