I am lucky to have a large extended family including lots of children of different ages. However it does make shopping for Christmas hard work and rather expensive. So I like to plan ahead early. As my own children and my nieces and nephews get older I find it even more difficult to shop for them. They are beginning to grow out of playing with toys and when asked they mainly wish for video games or money for their gift. But I’ve always thought it’s more fun Christmas morning to have an actual present to open and I think it’s lovely to find something they’ll find interesting and keep them away from screens. At least for a little while!

The SpyX Micro Gear Set that we have tried out this week is in my opinion a great play set that is going to appeal to kids of all ages. The SpyX Micro Gear Set is a handy set of gadgets to use for role playing secret missions, surveillance and spying. The set is suitable for 6+ years and I think it would interest much older children and teenagers too though. I’m sure plenty of adults will want to get in on the fun too.

The set arrived in a small, attractive cardboard box. It may only look small but there are a lot of cool gadgets included inside. Inside the box are tools plus a utility belt and clips to hang the gadgets on and an instruction booklet. However we found each piece fairly easy to work out and use.

The set included four gadgets –
A dual function alarm. It’s a small alarm that can be set by motion or vibration detection. This is probably my son’s favourite item and is now constantly set in his room to catch any intruders. He thinks it hilarious every time I accidentally set it off, usually coming in with clean laundry. This requires two batteries that are not included.
Micro Spy Light. This can be attached to the ear and casts a beam of light to help you spot people.
Micro Ear Listener. This has a small earbud and amplifies sounds. We’ve had to be very careful what we say, you never know when little ears are listening in on us!
Invisible Pen. I think my husband has had the most fun with this one. The pen writes invisible messages on paper which can then only be read by shining the decoder light on the paper.

The SpyX Micro Gear Set retails at around £20.99 and I think it definitely has a lot of play value for the money. I’m also pleased with the quality of the items for the price. The set encourages imaginative play and really is just a fun, novelty toy. I can imagine all the kids ganging together and spying on us adults. It’s great if you’re looking for a more unusual toy for a Christmas gift this year.
