Sous Chef Ramen Bowls Review

Reviewed by Alexis Randall

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that I have never been so excited about a bowl in my entire life. From the moment the two bowls arrived at my door to the time spent eating from them, it was all an experience helped by the authenticity and quality of the Ramen bowls. They came in a strong branded box packaged extremely well and as a final touch were wrapped in some Japanese newspaper. Thanks to the excellent quality of the packaging they were never at risk of being damaged or broken.

I was sent two Chouseki Ramen bowls from Sous Chef, as seen here.

At 21.5 cm x 8.5cm the bowl is substantial and will hold a litre of liquid should you ask it to. It’s made in Japan as well so you can be assured that you are getting a product that wouldn’t look out of place in a Japanese restaurant. The colours of the bowl are beautiful, with a mottled blue on top that fades into a sandy brown. It’s both heavy and wonderfully finished and you can see that it’s been crafted with care. the pottery feels solid and I suspect it would take a knock or two, but I won’t been trying it! There is no mention of if the bowls are dishwasher safe and I couldn’t find the information online. I’d be inclined to say that they aren’t as it may damage the glaze. I found on making the Ramen that the dishes kept the stock hot for a substantial amount of time, twenty minutes passed from serving and the food was still warm to eat.

There is a substantial base to the bowl that prevents the heat from transferring though to the table. They also very thick and it feels like a lot of care and attention has been put into the making of this Ramen bowl.

Once the bowls arrived, I set to sourcing the ingredients I would need to create the dish. Being a complete novice to this side of Japanese cuisine this presented quite an entertaining challenge. Who’d have thought one could spend so many hours looking for Miso! For me, this was all part of the experience in receiving the bowls. I’m a 41-year-old man who used to be a Chef and this, as a gift for Christmas, would have made me incredibly happy. In fact, I’d argue this could be one of the best things you could buy anyone who has an interest in food. If you wanted to read more on Ramen and its origins, then this link is an excellent resource https://www.souschef.co.uk/blogs/the-bureau-of-taste/what-is-ramen.

I firmly believe that had I never received these dishes I may never have tried Ramen, even if I had, were they were not presented as well as this bowl was, I may not have enjoyed it as much as I did. It’s enough to make me wish I was a Japanese emperor that could also this dish on demand, ideally in these bowls! I have no hesitation in recommending this product to anyone who is looking for something a little different. It’s everything I would want in a Christmas gift, you can even but as part of a gift set that has two Ramen bowls, two Ramen ladles, a full colour Ramen recipe booklet, all packed together in a reusable drawstring cotton gift bag. .

This is a solid product that does so much more than simply hold food. It pushes your boundaries in what foods you thought you were capable of making and presents them in such a way that you feel like a culinary master. It’s an easy 5 stars and I only wish I could have these in every design!
