“250 years ago the Bridgewater Canal was just a twinkle in the eye of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, now it’s part of our heritage. Most of the time I don’t even notice it. But sometimes I take my earphones off and just listen to the water…and it’s beautiful.”

Join us in a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Bridgewater Canal in words, music and imagery at The Lowry, Salford Quays.

This unique event will be performed by the BBC Philharmonic, with Matthew Barley on cello and the voices of 150 Salford primary school children, as well as dramatic sounds and images from the Salford Museum archive and narratives from actors. 

You'll meet the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater addressing the House of Lords; Friedrich Engels reading from ‘The Condition of the Working Class in England’; Lady Harriet Egerton talking about the school she built; foundry workers voing on strike action; Daniel Adamson on the successful Parliament Bill to build the Manchester Ship Canal; a WW2 munitions factory worker reading a letter from her sweetheart, a crew member of the Manchester Merchant ship, involved in Churchill’s top secret mission – Operation Fish; a radio DJ announcing the last barge trip of maize from Salford Docks to Trafford Park.
