On Wednesday we visited the Cresset Theatre in Peterborough to see Some Guys Have All the Luck – The Rod Stewart Story. The venue was in a good position, outside town so easy to get to and parking was easy.
On arrival we got drinks and a bag of chocolate that were overpriced in our opinion at £1.80 for a bottle of water or coke and £2.50 for the chocolate (but is probably on par with similar types of venue and shows). The toilets were quite old and tatty but clean. Staff were polite and helpful. It was not obvious where to go once you got inside the venue so maybe signs would be helpful!
The show itself was entertaining and exceeded our expectations. Some Guys Have All the Luck is a musical celebration of the life and career and rocker Rod Stewart who started as a street busker to who we know him today!
Paul Metcalfe as Rod Stewart sounded like him and was very enthusiastic, lively and charming without being too over the top. He sang all of the popular songs and kept the talking light, interesting and relevant. I left the show wanting to buy a CD even though I’m not really a massive Rod fan. The atmosphere was great, people were clearly enjoying themselves and the obvious fans (the lookalikes) were clearly impressed and having a great time. There was chance for audience participation but no pressure to join in. You don’t have to be a diehard fan to enjoy the show as long as you like some of Rod’s songs it is a good night out.
I would definitely recommend both the venue and the show. In fact it’s being booked again next year and I may buy tickets!
