With the night’s drawing in, and toy adverts starting to ramp up on the television, many people’s thoughts are turning to Christmas. With literally hundreds of products being advertised its always difficult to choose what to purchase so, slime being a favourite of his over the last year, my son was pleased to be able to review a new slime toy. From the description, the So Slime DIY Magical Slime Potion Maker by Canal Toys is less a slime toy and more a potion maker, so we were interested to see how it worked and what it did.
Although the slime potion maker arrived in a very feminine looking pink and purple box with a picture of a girl playing with glittery slime, he wasn’t put off and was keen to try it out. Inside the box is a magic cauldron, 3 potion bottles, 3 colour elixirs, a packet of slime powder, 3 future telling powders, 5 types of decoration, a necklace string, bottle labels, two measuring spoons and a future telling sheet. We unpacked everything from the box, checked everything was there and read through the instructions. The first thing we realised is that we needed four AA batteries for the cauldron, four is quite a few to have to hand but we did manage to find them by taking two out of something else. Once that was done, we added water as per the instructions and turned the cauldron on. I must admit we were very impressed as it lights up with colour changing lights and produces a fine mist that looks very magical. On the back of the future telling sheet, we found 8 different potion recipes. There are potions for every eventuality, from love to success & bravery and each are mixed using different proportions of powder, water, colour elixir and decorations. They are easy to make by just adding the products to the cauldron and then mixing with the plastic spoon included. When made you can put them in the bottles and label them with the adhesive label provided. You can them choose the one you need best, eg the luck potion and hang it round your neck on the necklace string.
The other thing you can do with the potion maker is predict your future using the magic future telling powders. You add one of the surprise bags to the cauldron bowl, add water and the colour appears. You then choose a decoration from the selection provided and look up the final slime mix you have made on the future telling sheet. These were all fun predictions and he enjoyed making one for each of us.
Whilst he had fun making them, unfortunately the slime powder ran out before we could try them all and I couldn’t find a refill to purchase on line, so the potion maker cant be used anymore, its such a shame as it becomes an expensive one use toy instead of something that can be played with over and over.
We had fun with the So Slime DIY Magical Potion Maker, enjoyed both the making of the potions and the future telling but the lack of ingredients let it down, with more powder it would be a really fabulous toy.
I’m going to award this 3.5 out of 5 purely because of the fact that it now can’t be used. The cauldron really does give you a sense of the mystic with its lights and mist, so I’m sure your Christmas gift recipient would be impressed and be kept entertained over the festive period.
