On Saturday morning I received an early morning delivery from Sponge Online Cakes. Three cakes were delivered by 8.30am and were packaged really well. The boxes were taped together very securely so there was no chance they would become separated in transit. There was also a THIS WAY UP notice in red on every box. The delivery driver left them in my secure porch.
On Sunday, when I had family round and we had finished our roast dinner we decided to sample the cakes instead of having our usual dessert.
The second box we opened was a Victoria Sponge Cake which was large! Large enough I would think to provide 16 portions, it really was huge! The special thing about this cake was that it had a layer of edible paper on the top of the cake which was printed with a picture of Santa and his sleigh flying high over the trees, as well as a printed outline of Merry Christmas. It was a Colouring Cake!! All could be coloured in with the special pens Sponge had thoughtfully provided.
Sponge say they use natural oils and flavours for their bakes and on the box it also states they proudly use British Ingredients. They also stated ‘Our bakes are lovingly handmade in small batches’.
On checking the label we found this cake contained wheat so it was not suitable for my eldest granddaughter who has coeliac disease, but the rest of the family could enjoy it.
I cut myself and my daughter a small slice of the Victoria Sponge cake before it could be decorated, we couldn’t wait. The sponge cake was very nice and moist with a lovely taste and texture. It also had a jam and buttercream filling sandwiched between the layers. I think it had another layer of the buttercream filling on top under the icing. I personally found the buttercream filling quite sweet combined with the jam and of course with the icing on the top, but I know others would love it. This cake can be kept at room temperature.
Once we had taste tested the sponge cake the youngest granddaughter took the rest of it home for her mum and dad to try, but not before she has decorated the top of course! The feedback from my daughter today has been excellent. The eldest granddaughter described the sponge cake as being ‘aesthetically pleasing’ although she couldn’t try it.
I personally think Sponge Online Cakes do really well to produce such a variety of cakes which they can send out to customers by courier in the knowledge that they will arrive in perfect condition. Not one of the cakes we sampled yesterday were damaged in any way. This is as a result of the excellent way in which they are packaged.
I have been browsing the Sponge Online Cakes website to see what other cakes they do. How about a Nutella Cake from £16.75 for eight pieces or £26.50 for 16 pieces, or maybe a Lemon Drizzle Cake for £15.75 for eight pieces or £25.00 for 16 pieces. I would be torn between the Lemon Drizzle, especially if it was very lemony, and the Coffee Cake at £15.75 for eight pieces or £25.00 for 16 pieces.
They also do a Christmas Sharing Sponge which has four slices each of their Christmas Specials, Mince Pie, Trifle, Spiced Orange and Cranberry and Nutella £33 for sixteen pieces.
Sponge Online Cakes also have a ‘Refer a Friend’ scheme.
I am really impressed with the Sponge Online Cakes range.
