One of my memories from childhood is getting a different colour tongue from drinking Slush Puppies. There is nothing better than an ice cold Slushie on a hot summer day, or for that matter, a breezy autumn day or even a cold winter day! We always pestered our mum for a slush whenever we saw a machine, and growing up in the 80s there were machines in lots of shops! I have no idea what made them so special; the crushed ice, the syrup, the sugar rush or the fact that it was just a different drink from the carbonated drinks we were all used to.
For those that are unaware of what a Slush Puppie is (and I doubt that are many over the age of 5 that don’t) Slush Puppie was created in 1970 and is a non-carbonated drink with just two ingredients; syrup and ice.
These days, kids still pester for Slushies, although there don’t seem to be as many machines around as when I was growing up. But times change and no longer do you have to visit the cinema or find a shop with a machine to satisfy that thirst, you can now make your own at home with your very own official Slush Puppie Slush Maker.
With Slush Puppie celebrating their fiftieth anniversary in 2020, we received our very own Slush Puppie Slushie Maker Set from the Retro Gifting section of gifting website Yes I Want It. Yes I Want It offer thousands of gifts, gadgets and accessories on their website, making it the perfect place to find that quirky gift.
Included in the Slush Puppie Slush Maker Set is:
1x Slush Puppie Slushie Machine with Jug and Mixing Paddle
1x 330ml Bottle of Blue Raspberry Syrup
1x 330ml Bottle of Red Cherry Syrup
4x Paper Slush Puppie Cups
4x Paper Straws
1x Instruction Booklet
The Slushie Puppie machine is capable of making up to 1.1 litres of delicious Slushie at a time.
Armed with our shiny new machine, two bottles of syrup and some ice cube bags straight out of the freezer we were ready to relive our childhood and red and blue tongues, and hopefully create the same great tasting Slushies that we remembered.
As a Slush Puppie is basically flavoured shaved ice, there is not much to do to prepare the machine for use. It takes a few seconds to prepare:
- Place the mixing paddle into the jug
- Add your chosen Slush Puppie liquid to the jug (82.5ml) as indicated on the Slush Puppie embossed side of the jug – the other side is for other non-Slush Puppie liquids and requires different amounts.
- Place the jug into the machine and rotate clockwise so that it locks into place (it should go back as far as it will go, and the top of the mixing paddle will lift into place on the receiver).
- Add your ice to the top chamber (we were using ice cube bags and 1 bag full was enough ice to make half a batch – ½ litre or 2 cups).
- Set the dial of the front of the machine to fine or course (there is a noticeable difference in the size of the shavings).
- Plug in the machine.
At this point nothing will happen. There is no visible on/off switch to start the process. To turn on the machine, place on the lid and twist to lock into place. As the lid locks the machine will start to shave the ice. The ice is then dispensed into the jug and the mixing paddle will get to work, mixing the syrup with the shaved ice. Once all the ice has been used you twist the lid to unlock which turns off the machine.
We how had half a batch of our favourite iced drink. Unlock the jug, stir the contents with a spoon to make sure it’s fully mixed and serve. 4 paper cups and paper straws are supplied.
We received two of the original flavours but there are 10 core flavours, including the ones we remember from our childhoods (blue raspberry, red cherry and green apple) and many other flavours available including time-limited ones. The Slushie tasted just as good as I remembered from all those years ago, and yes, I still stuck my tongue out to check the colour!
The Slush Puppie Maker would be great for kids’ parties making good old Slushies using syrup, cola or cordial, and that is what most people probably think Slushies are for. But it would also be great for more grown-up drinks such as iced coffee (just use the machine to crush the ice) or for adult parties using alcohol. With Christmas just a few days away, an iced coffee with a shot of Baileys would make a perfect Christmas beverage.
We have loved the Slush Puppie Maker. It is easy to use (and just as easy to clean – only ‘clean’ ice goes through the machine, not sticky syrups). While it uses a static blade and spinning ice chamber, the machine doesn’t heat up and melt the ice. The Slushies and iced coffees have been excellent, and the machine can even just be used to shave ice to put into drinks for your Christmas celebrations.
The kids have loved being able to have a Slushie whenever they want. Each 330ml bottle of syrup (larger bottles are also available) can make approx. 2 litres of Slushie.
If you want to give that perfect retro gift, then you can’t go wrong with the Slush Puppie Slushie Maker Set from Yes I Want It!
