I have never been to see a musical before so last night I went along to see Sister Act The Musical at the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield, and invited my sister in law to join me. And oh my word, what a show! It was a sell-out performance with a mixture of women and men of all ages. The atmosphere, even before the show began, was fantastic, so we were really looking forward to it starting.
I have seen Sister Act the movie before but this show was a foot tapping, hand clapping, amazing, fabulous musical.
With the non-stop music, the musical tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, played by the incredibly talented Alexandra Burke, starting with her singing in the ‘Curtis Club’ owned by her gangster boyfriend Curtis Jackson who she later witnesses him killing a friend. She promises she didn’t see anything. But she hurries away and goes to tell the police what she has seen. The police officer turns out to be an old friend from high school. Eddie, or Sweaty Eddie as she remembers him by! Police Officer Eddie decides she must go to stay at the convent as Curtis will be after her and he needs her to be safe and that Curtis will not think of looking for her there.
On Christmas morning Mother Superior introduces Deloris Van Cartier, now dressed as nun, as Sister Mary Clarence to the other nuns. Throughout the show the singing is fantastic from the first time you here the nuns sing!! Goodness me, very funny!
As the show continues sister Mary Clarence manages to transform the nuns into amazing singers, and more and more people begin to going to church to hear them and they managed to raise money to save the church! If they sang at my local church like this I would go every week.!!! LOL.
I can honestly say every single performer was fantastic! I have never laughed so much. And by the end of the show when they had everyone standing, clapping and dancing. Most definitely a show not to be missed…!
