I love musicals, so jumped at the chance to review Hairspray at the Palace Theatre in Manchester last night. Upon arrival we were greeted by some well-presented, friendly members of staff. We collected our tickets quickly and headed up to the Grand Tier bar for a drink before the show.
The cost of the drinks as as to be expected at a theatre, around £13 for a bottle of beer and a wine spritzer. Half an hour before the show started, the doors opened to the auditorium and we headed down some steps to our seats. We had a great view of the stage.
For those that don’t know Hairspray is a musical comedy set in 1960’s Baltimore about Tracy Turnblad who wants to fulfil her ambition to dance on national television. She soon becomes a local star and uses her fame to fight for equality and even finds love along the way.
There was eager anticipation when the show started. The set looked amazing and the scenery changes were flawless. There were 2 TV screens at the level for the people where we were sat, as well as further below for those lower down. The costumes looked amazing. They were made from such vibrant colours.
The cast worked so well together. My favourites were Tony Maudsley who played Edna Turnblad and brought such humour to his character. I laughed so much at his mannerisms. Claire Sweeney was wonderful as Velma Von Tussle. I have followed her career since her days in Brookside. Peter Duncan had me roaring with laughter so much playing Wilbur Turnblad.
For me, the dance which Tracy’s parents did quite near the end of the show was the highlight of my evening.
Freya Sutton portrayed Tracy Turnblad flawlessly. Her vocals and dancing were simply amazing. I watched in awe during all the dance routines. I loved the important messages which the show was trying to portray.
The show came to an end with a show stopping performance of You Can’t Stop the Beat.
In summary, I had a very enjoyable evening at a stunning venue. The show had it all from serious to funny, great music and quality acting. A hilarious evening that will have you leaving the theatre in a great feel good mood.
Tickets cost from £17.90 to £59.90 (plus £4 transaction fee).
