Attending “Save the Princess” at the Hen & Chickens Theatre was an exhilarating experience that seamlessly blended interactive theatre with the nostalgic charm of video games. As a member of the audience, I was immediately drawn into a world where the traditional narrative structure was upended, offering a fresh and engaging theatrical experience. It was not at all what I expected but kept me glued to the set throughout.

The premise centres on Princess Plum, a character determined to break free from her damsel-in-distress role. A mysterious glitch propels her into a multiverse filled with parodies of iconic video games. This setup not only paid homage to gaming culture but also provided a rich tapestry for humour and adventure.

What set this production apart was its interactive nature. Utilizing a web application, the audience collectively influenced the storyline, making choices that determined the direction of the plot. This element of audience participation was both innovative and immersive, creating a dynamic environment where each performance could unfold differently.

The creative team, The UnDisposables, demonstrated a keen understanding of both theatrical and gaming conventions. Their ability to intertwine these elements resulted in a production that was both entertaining and thought-provoking. The script penned by Esther Joy Mackay, was sharp and witty, with dialogue that resonated with both gaming enthusiasts and theatre aficionados.

The Hen & Chickens Theatre provided an intimate setting that enhanced the interactive experience. The venue’s cosy atmosphere allowed for a close connection between the performers and the audience, fostering a sense of community and shared adventure.

In conclusion, “Save the Princess” at the Hen & Chickens Theatre was a standout production that pushed the boundaries of traditional theatre. Its innovative approach to storytelling, combined with a deep appreciation for gaming culture, made it a memorable and enjoyable experience. I left the theatre with a sense of excitement and curiosity, eager to see how the next audience would navigate the multiverse of possibilities.
