I thought I’d start with telling you what was included in the box

• 1 light up base
• 2 pvc creations a unicorn and a butterfly
• 1 gem pen
• 1 piece of rubber wax
• 1 tray
• 1,300 gems in 8 different colours
• 1 instruction booklet

Not included: 3x AA batteries which I would recommend you have before you start making the set.

Setting up was very easy, just a case of getting everything out of the box getting some rubber wax on the end of the pen and tipping some of the gems into the tray, then the all important decision of which to do first the butterfly or the unicorn.

Our six year old went for the butterfly first and this was a perfect project for her to manage on her own with little supervision, choosing which colour she was going to use first she opened the pack of gems and tipped some of them into the tray, when the tray is given a gentle shake the gems spread out and make it easier to pick up. Then she pressed the end of the pen into the square of wax and then onto a gem, they picked up very easily and when they stop picking up it’s time to load more wax onto the pen. She had no problem knowing where to put the gem onto the design, just match the colours and there is a small indent that the gem sits in. There are more than enough gems to complete both designs so don’t worry if you lose a few.

Full instructions are included but it is all very self explanatory.

The design is covered with a thin plastic film and I would recommend you keep hold of this, if the design is not completed in one go you will need this to cover it until next time as the whole thing is sticky.

The design is very colourful and as the gems are applied it really starts to sparkle, our six year old was engrossed in the activity and stopped a few times to proudly show us her progress. To be honest she is a child with quite a short attention span and I was amazed at how this project held her attention for a few hours, she was so engrossed in it and keen to get it finished, she even switched the TV off !

When all the gems have been applied the design really sparkles and when it is slotted into the light up base that changes colour it is magical and makes a lovely night light for a child’s room.

Made by Canal Toys this kit is suitable for ages six and above this is a perfect kit to get out on a rainy day or after school and there’s very little mess afterwards.

It has a RRP of £13 but at the time of writing it’s available for £10 from some retailers. This is a perfect price for a Just because gift, Easter or birthday gift.
