Sheila’s Mental Health Show at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre Review

Reviewed by Catherine Norris

The Mental Health Show, performed by qualified counsellor and comedienne Sheila McMahon, was not at all what I was expecting, but was a fascinating and insightful show nonetheless.

Sheila, who has battled depression throughout her life, now works with others to help them overcome their demons, stating that with regards to her depression, ‘coming out was the best thing I ever did’.

The Mental Health Show could be compared to group therapy with a comedic twist. Sheila discusses the many factors which contribute to affected mental health, and uses fantastic analogies to demonstrate these. Strategies to overcome problems that we all have are shared, such as dealing with that constant negative inner voice, as well as ways to begin to accept and overcome what may have caused us to think that way in the first place.

Among all of this ‘heavy stuff’ is plenty of laughter, which after all is a natural remedy for depression. An Irish dancing competition ensured that the audience were in stiches, as well as a visit from Sister Mary, who was a clear hit with the audience. This was an entertaining and interactive show, that involved audience singing and dancing and developed a sense of unity. By the end of the evening the audience were sharing lifts and raffle prizes!

This is a fantastic and surprising show. It is incredibly thought evoking and made me question many aspects of my life. I would certainly recommend a show that enabled me to empathise with the bullies in my life, understand my father’s anger and finally shake my mother’s negativity off me! This show should be available on the NHS, it is a safe way in for those who would like to know more about mental health and is doing a great job of raising awareness of this important issue whilst breaking the stigma.
