My friend and I travelled by car to Buxton, in order to see She Stoops to Conquer. The Opera House is clearly signposted, and we were able to park close by. The car park rates were very competitive, it cost just £3 for three to four hours, and it’s free after 6pm, Monday to Friday. We strolled through the park which led to the Opera House. The entrance was easy to find and welcoming. All staff located both in the entrance area and box office were pleasant, friendly and approachable. Upon arrival we were greeted by a member of the Opera House’s staff, who swiftly attended to our needs, handed us flyer about the performance and obtained our tickets. Clear directions were provided to assist us with finding our seats. Our seats were located in the dress circle, E9 and E10. These seats provided a great view of the whole stage.

The performance commenced at 7.30 prompt. There were 8 actors in the performance, who also conducted the set changes too. Each and every one of these actors did a fantastic job, what a great team. I felt that the performance was slow to start with, but it started to get going just before the interval.

The title of the performance ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ describes the motive of the performance. Marlow becomes the conquest for Mr Hardcastle’s daughter.  When they first meet in an official setting Marlow stutters and quivers around such a well-educated young woman. However, Miss Hardcastle has an unexpected meeting with Marlow and he believes her to be a maid.  At this meeting Marlow is at easy and they start connecting with one another. There are lots of differing characters in the performance with great acting skills. There was great use of stage settings and the costumes were great.

During the interval my friend and I visited the bar for refreshments. The drinks were nice and cold and reasonably priced. Clear announcements were made over the intercom system to advise that the interval was coming to an end and that the performance was due re-commence.

The performance did pick up in the second half with more humour.

The performance ended shortly after 10pm.

I do not normally watch this type of performance and I was shocked by the fact that I found it enjoyable.
