Seven Drunken Nights: The Story of The Dubliners at the Guild Hall in Preston is a 3 hour show with one interval.

Car parking couldn’t be easier for this venue. The multi-storey bus station car park connects to the venue via a covered walkway and on a drizzly night when we visited the Guild Hall, this was definitely a bonus. The car park charges £3.20 for up to 4 hours, and when parked on level 1 you will see the door to the Guild Hall clearly indicated.

The Guild Hall is situated in what once was largely a shopping complex. The complex has undergone redevelopment and now also contains bars and restaurants, ideal for a pre-theatre meal.

The Charter Theatre, within the Guild Hall, is modern and compact, and offers good views of the stage. We were seated in the circle, and the legroom for the seats is quite limited on this level.

The theme for the evening was set as you took your seat, in the background you were treated to gentle Irish background music. When The Dubliners took to the stage they were received by a lively and receptive Preston audience.

The show details the journey of the Irish Group The Dubliners, going back to the 1950’s when the group formed, and highlighting their highs and their lows via a combination of conversations with the audience, a slide show and most importantly singing their songs.

From the moment the singing started there is no way you will not be able to join in with clapping, foot tapping and singing. The audience participation on this night was fantastic and this added to the overall pleasure of the evening.

The finale of the first half session was a great rendition of the fabulous ‘Seven Drunken Nights’, this left you wanting more in the second half, and you weren’t disappointed. The high standard of music continued and included breath-taking, high paced, instrumentals by the violin and guitar player.

By the end of the show people were out of their seats, dancing and clapping along to the many songs, and there were numerous cries for more from the audience, who didn’t want this evening to come to an end.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable evening to be enjoyed by all ages, and especially for those with Irish connections.

Rating: 4/5
