I attended the premier of the Scottish Ballet’s contemporary production of Swan Lake at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow last night. I have to be honest and say that I didn’t really know what to expect as this was my first experience of the ballet and I wasn’t convinced that I would enjoy it. How wrong could I be? From the moment the fantastic orchestra played the first note of Tchaikovski’s emotionally charged score, to the dramatic climax and curtain fall I was entranced.
This contemporary production of the timeless story of love found, betrayal and love lost unfolded in front of me and I was engrossed.
I was in awe of the dancers, their talent, strength, stamina and grace made the story very easy to follow and I totally believed that there were swans gliding across the stage as I was so lost in the performance.
The principal dancers Sophie Martin and Christopher Harrison lead this performance surrounded by the unbelievable talent of the rest of the company, each individual contributing as much as the next to make this an enchanting spectacle.
The orchestra were instrumental, pardon the pun, for bringing this performance to life. The music sweeps you along and evokes the emotions that the dancers are portraying on stage.
My 16 year old daughter was with me and she was as engaged and moved as I was, going to show that this is a production which spans the generations and I was pleased to have been able to take her and see how much she enjoyed this experience.
I could not have been happier that this was my first taste of ballet as it has show me that this art is for the enjoyment of all ages and backgrounds and I shall certainly be waiting with anticipation for the Scottish Ballet’s future production of Hansel and Gretal.
I would encourage anyone young and old to go along and experience an emotion evoking, captivating performance from this outstandingly talented dance company.
