I love Christmas and everything associated with it, especially the magic and tradition of Father Christmas (or Santa as some like to call him). Every year I love seeing my sons’ excited faces when they write their Christmas lists and put out reindeer food and snacks for Santa and his reindeer on Christmas Eve, and then rush downstairs on Christmas morning to see if he has been and brought them presents. It’s just lovely to have this tradition. However, as my sons are getting older (currently 9 and 6 years) I know that time is limited before my oldest son finds out that all is not as it seems, and is very unlikely to be able to keep the secret to himself and not ruin the magic for his younger brother too. I’ve been trying to think of the best way to deal with this when it arises so when I was asked to review Santa’s Secret Letter it sounded like it could be the perfect solution.

Santa’s Secret Letter is, as you would expect, a lovely letter to a child explaining the history of St Nicholas and the true origins of the tradition of leaving gifts for children on Christmas Eve and how this has continued to this day, even though St Nicholas is no longer with us. It goes on to explain how, even though Santa isn’t real, the tradition is very real and that adults have to help to continue the magic and spread the legacy. And now that the child, who has received the letter, is old enough they too have learned the secret and that it is very special. The letter goes on to tell them how they have to continue to keep the magic alive for all of the children in their lives. There is also a declaration at the end of the letter for them to say and to sign to confirm that they will carry on spreading Santa’s Magic. The wording of the letter really is so lovely and explains the whole situation much better than I could come up with myself.

The letter is printed on good quality paper and personalised in hand written gold ink with the child’s name, which is great as it makes it look more realistic. It comes rolled up and tied with ribbon in a presentation cardboard box which makes it a lovely item to give to a child and makes it feel special.

I love the whole idea of Santa’s Secret Letter and, whilst I haven’t shown it to my son yet, I am keeping it for the day when I do need to let him in on the secret. This will make it so much easier although I hope it is not for many years to come yet (Yes, I know that’s probably wishful thinking!).

For me the only negative of this product is that it is fairly expensive £15 (although it is currently on offer for £11.99) which is, in my opinion, a lot of money for essentially a piece of paper and some ribbon. But then, as the website says “just how much is a few more years of excitement worth”? In my opinion probably a little less than £15 but it is still a really lovely item and I would recommend it as a great way to let children into the secret of Santa. It’s definitely a lot better than discovering that Santa isn’t real by catching your Dad in the act of putting the presents by the chimney as happened to me!
