Santa Claus and the Christmas Adventure at the Wycombe Swan Review

18-24 December 2018

If you have children 8 years or under and a love for all things festive then I can’t recommend ‘Santa Claus and the Christmas Adventure’ currently performing at Old Town Hall, High Wycombe highly enough. Yesterday I took my three girls, 4, 4 and 6 who had a cracking Christmas time! Showing every day from now until Christmas Eve, the cast of three are performing multiple shows each day, lasting roughly 45minutes – the perfect length of time to keep everyone’s attention.

Set in Santa’s Ice Palace in the North Pole the race is on to save Christmas. The story is led by elves Cara and Charlie who are busy preparing presents for the big day and we meet Santa, complete with big round tummy. There is singing, dancing, and lots of laughs – I enjoyed the show just as much as my girls! After becoming deputy elves, the boys and girls of the audience must help Santa, Cara and Charlie to save Christmas and find a way to deliver the presents.

I think the thing I loved about this show the most as a parent was the subtle emphasis on learning. After a group rendition of ‘Rudolph the red nose reindeer’ Santa and Charlie talk to the children about name calling and why bullying is not ok alongside why the Earth isn’t flat, hot countries compared to cold countries and other Christmas traditions. My girls would all agree when Santa made it snow was the best bit!

Run by the Wycombe Swan this production is staffed by the same friendly theatre staff from the main building. Having three children to entertain we’ve been to lots of different festive activities over the years and I can honestly say this is one of my favourites! To top off a lovely feel good family adventure the children get called row by row to go on stage and meet Santa, after a quick chat (where they all changed their minds on the ‘must have’ gift they need!) and a round of photos they collect a little gift and it’s the end of the show.

Full marks for a wonderful thought out family treat!
