Rummikub is a numbers strategy game based on the popular card game Rummy. The game is really easy to play; players draw 14 tiles and place them on their rack. The rack is very useful for sorting your tiles and collating runs whilst you wait for your turn. The aim of the game is to be the first to use all your tiles by placing them down in groups (same value, different colours) and runs (same colour, sequential numbers) until you have no more tiles to play. A minimum of 3 tiles are needed to form a group and if you can’t make a valid move then another tile must be drawn. You need to put down tiles with a total of at least 30 on your first go but after that you can play as many or as few tiles as you want. Once you have started, you can move the tiles on the table, creating new groups and runs until all your tiles have been used.
The instruction were very clear and as there was no set up needed for this game we quickly got into it. It is suitable for children aged 7 and above and my 10 year old son quickly grasped the game and can play with little assistance.
The game can be played with 2-4 players however we found it more fun with 4 players as there were more tiles in play, which makes it easier to form runs and groups of numbers.
We have really enjoyed playing Rummikub, it is a great family game and a welcome alternative to computer games. It is quite addictive and it is a nice change sitting down to play a board game together rather than everyone being on different electronic gadgets!
