Sunday morning was bright and beautiful as we set off for our overnight stay at Ellenboro House in the Lake District National Park. The journey took around an hour and a half and we passed some stunning scenery which seemed even better in the sunshine. We had already been given directions via email from Sam on how to find them. They proved very helpful and we had no problems locating the quaint little Bed and Breakfast.
On arrival we were greeted by Ian as we entered the garden who introduced himself followed by Jonah (the family dog) who was a star and lastly Sam.
Sam is the perfect host and made us feel very welcome straightaway. She showed us around and then made us a cup of coffee with a plate of homemade scones, jam and cream – what a lovely thought! She then left us to make ourselves at home.
The Snug
A cosy room for the guests to relax in. There is a TV, DVD player, magazines, books, games and DVD’s. An open fire adds to the relaxed atmosphere. We were asked would we like it lighting but it was a warm day so we declined. I imagine it would be heaven on a cold dark night after a day exploring the local area. There is also a comfy sofa with plenty of room for two and a small dining table.
The Bedroom
A fairly big room with an ensuite bathroom. The view from the window is fantastic all you can see are hills fields and sheep, I lay in bed in the morning staring out at the countryside and thinking how lucky I was to be there! There is a TV and kettle and towels are provided. Sam is happy to give you fresh milk from the fridge whenever you want, which I found much better than the rather nasty UHT cartons you usually get. There is also a tin of treats located with the tea/coffee/hot chocolate consisting of sweets and the most delicious homemade shortbread. The bed is comfortable and the sheets are clean and crisp.
Breakfast
This is usually served at 8.30am but I asked could we possibly have at nine. Again this was no problem. We had been asked the day before what would we like to eat. We both opted for the traditional English breakfast but here were lots of other options too ranging from pancakes, smoked haddock fishcake to Huevos Rancheros – spicy Mexican dish with tomatoes, peppers chilli and baked egg the latter of which I would have loved to have tried but not first thing in the morning.
We came down to the table set out ready for our arrival. You can help yourself to cereals and fruit and there were two jugs, one containing orange, the other I think cranberry although I didn’t taste that one. At the moment there is only one guest room (although they are renovating another as we speak) so it’s a very intimate setting of just the two of you, oh and Jonah (but only if you want his company. We did!)
Breakfast was delicious. Sam makes all her own bread and she asked would we like some toast? White or brown? We opted for brown. It couldn’t have been better and the home made jam topped it off perfectly. We were also given a pot of coffee at this time.
Next we had rare breed pork sausage and bacon from Higginsons. Eggs, baked cherry tomatoes and homemade (once again) potato cakes. You can have your eggs (one or two) done anyway you like, we had fried. Everything was yummy served hot and well presented. I really can’t fault any of it. After we had a chat with Sam and headed back upstairs to pack and be on our way.
The hospitality at Ellenboro House is second to none and we enjoyed our stay there immensely. Nothings too much trouble and it is a home from home. There are some brilliant walks on the doorstep that if you get a chance to visit Newton-in-Cartmel and especially Ellenboro House you must take advantage of. We had a walk down to the local pub, and Sam is happy to ring ahead and book a table for you or advise on places further afield. I hope to be back again sometime in the not too distance future to sample this lovely establishment again.
As we left the sun was shining and Sam came to the door to say goodbye. Jonah on the other hand saw us all the way to the gate! What a perfect gentleman!
Lovely place with great hosts and a dog friendly establishment (via prior arrangement).
